So the urge to play Vanguards in commander just hit me. Was wondering about peoples experience doing this and whether or not any of them may be strong enough to need banned from use in the format.

I have played with them several times. It makes for fun interesting games. For the life adjustment on the vanguard we double whatever life adjustment is on the card because it was designed for 20 life not 40.

If you're looking up neat and unique ways to spice up your commander experience, also look at "Horde mode".
Commander Vs did Halloween specials with this a couple of times

The Planechase Planes cards are fun to spice up Commander as well.

MagicMarc I love Planechase Commander but now imagine that combined with Vanguard. I think I'm in love

That would be pretty crazy for all the deck combinations with a Vanguard and a deck of planes!
About Horde Magic, If you have not tried that format out yet, it is a lot of fun too. Basically, you play a version of Commander with each human player, called a "Survivor", piloting a Horde Magic friendly commander deck. Then there is the Horde deck which is not piloted by a player. It is an automatic deck which has rules of play to handle it's turns. All of the survivors, the human players, band together to fight the Horde deck. It can be very fun.
Here is a deck I made that is a variation of one of the original Horde Magic decks. There is a link in the description to the Horde Magic rules wiki too: I Want Your Brains!.

Seems fun but a number of them are very strong. I think itd be hard to balance
