Why are you not allowed to have the same card twice in your deck?

I was just wondering why you are not allowed to have the dame card in the deck twice, except for lands of course.

Edh is what they call a "singleton format" having this deck building restriction allows for creating interesting, challenging, and sometimes fair decks

You can have as many copies of a card that you want... they just have to be named Persistent Petitioners , Relentless Rats , Shadowborn Apostle , "Plains", "Island", "Swamp", "Mountain", and/or "Forest" lol. Otherwise you're limited to a single copy of anything else.

EDH has its origins as elder dragon highlander. It was created by judges using the original elder dragons as commander hence the ED in EDH. Highlander is a movie that famously said there can only be one meaning that no card can be repeated with the exception of the above mentioned card. The history of the format is really neat. The commander damage rule stemmed from the elder dragons as well. If any other them connect 3x that’s where the 21 commander damage comes from
