A BUG Tiny Leaders Commander - Advice Needed

Custom Cards forum

Posted on March 3, 2015, 9:50 p.m. by FAMOUSWATERMELON

I heard that Tiny Leaders did not have a BUG commander, so I decided to make one.

I don't really have much experience in BUG (or Sultai nowadays) but I believe that it has a graveyard/reanimation type game, so I built around that. The walks are simply flavor, I didn't want to make her too powerful. Her ability works well with the graveyard dump theme, as she allows you to get the card you need and dump the rest for reanimation/dredge or whatever.

So is she not good, or too good, or playable? Let me know!!

Thanks for looking!!

I am by no means an expert but i feel like the walk abilities are not necessary/don't really fit. she walks against her own land types? don't fully understand the reason. I know you said it's for flavor so that's just my 2 cents.

I think her tap ability is fairly balanced. However, I do have a concern. What are you reanimating with? i can't think of anything that would be tiny leaders legal that you can animate with.

I do like the theory but i think so more tweaking is needed. Good starting point though.

Also, on a side note. That artwork is pretty sick. Where did you get that?

I personally think that paying three mana for a repeatable Glimpse the Future seems really good on a three drop.

I think it'd be better if the ability was draw up to three cards and discard that many cards. No card advantage but plenty of digging.

Thanks for the opinion! The walks are really just flavor, since I guess it would be logical for her to creep through enemy ranks via a swamp, because it's her natural habitat. I was originally thinking of deathtouch or hexpoof, would that work instead?

But you raise a problem that I did not think of... I guess I didn't realize that there aren't really any reanimation spells for 3CMC... Her ability is still pretty nice, I guess. Do any spells that would work well with this come to mind (I have zero experience with TL)?

And that artwork is sooooooo sick, right??? I got it at this website:

Oh the irony. You comment on my card while I comment on yours... (awesome card BTW).

To be honest, I did not actually realize that that was a card... The draw three/discard three would definitely be fairer, I'll change that now. Any opinion on changing her abilities?

I would say to just drop the landwalking entirely and it is a great card! Very reminiscent of Adun Oakenshield and friends.

Also there is lots of reanimation at 3 CMC or less, like Reanimate, Animate Dead, Dance of the Dead, Necromancy, Unearth, etc.

I think the other abilities could be just hexproof. I'd play it. :)

So here's the next version :)

I guess I sort of prefer deathtouch because it goes well with the snake theme here. Any other suggestions?

And lemmingllama, thanks for pointing that out! Makes me feel more assured that I didn't screw up!

Regarding the new version ------hello Damia, Sage of Stone's cousin. lol. I would play this in a heartbeat.

March 3, 2015 10:26 p.m.

Haha in which case hexproof is definitely better :)

Final version (hopefully):

Instead of juggling between deathtouch and hexproof, just add both! It would be my re flavorful that way.

I also like the first ability better but that's just me.

this is a great card that could benefit from a few things. I'm not really sure what to add, but it lacks.... something...

This card is bonkers. Adding Hexproof is almost too much. A 3 CMC Commander that protects itself and allows the player ridonkulous advantage?

March 4, 2015 1:17 a.m.

So I'm hearing a lot of Hexproof and Deathtouch, but would that make it too much?

DERPLINGSUPREME Haha I know that feeling... Still trying to see.

vault Well she needs to be 3CMC cause she's for Tiny Leaders... But she does have a pretty good ability. I would personally take off hexproof because she's already pretty bolt-proof, but I don't know what to add... Just deathtouch makes her too much like Damia, Sage of Stone...

SO ANY IDEAS OF ANOTHER ABILITY TO GO WITH DEATHTOUCH???

March 4, 2015 7:37 a.m.

lemmingllama says... #20

Just deathtouch works. Remember, you already have a 2/4 for 3, which passes the vanilla test. Adding on a way to Ideas Unbound every turn is pretty great, and deathtouch is just icing on the cake. Hexproof would be way too much, I would honestly consider playing a vanilla 2/4 hexproof deathtouch, let alone the card advantage she can give.

March 4, 2015 8:35 a.m.

That was my first choice, but I feel that it marks it too much like Damia... But I agree that hexproof doesn't really work...

March 4, 2015 9:48 a.m.

lemmingllama says... #22

I personally think that a Sultai Ascendancy type effect for three cards as an activated ability would be good, and with no activation cost. That would make it very reasonably costed, and the 2/4 deathtouch would fit the snake theme. Or a costed ability that does Taigam's Scheming. This would make it more of a deck manipulation creature, and Damia is just drawing cards.

March 4, 2015 10:04 a.m.

MagicalHacker says... #23

Maybe it'd be better to make it two cards instead of three.

March 4, 2015 10:30 a.m.

MagicalHacker Well its up to three cards, so two works too.

How about Flash and Deathtouch? Sounds pretty sweet to me.

March 4, 2015 10:44 a.m.

lemmingllama says... #25

It's just that card advantage is king, and being able to exchange so many cards every turn can help you find exactly what you need.

Also Flash and Deathtouch could work, although I would recommend you lower her toughness if you do that. Ambush Viper and Winged Coatl both have 1 toughness for a reason.

March 4, 2015 10:50 a.m.

lemmingllama digging through cards is nice, but it cost three different colored mana (not so easy in TL) and her tapping instead of attacking or blocking. Also, I'm probably going to put deathtouch and islandwalk, because she seems like that kind of person.
