A replacement for Path in Modern

A card to replace Path to Exile in modern, but in black:

Pull into the Dephs

Instant

Destroy target creature.

If that creature entered the battlefield from the graveyard this turn, exile it instead.

You lose 4 life

What do you think? Is 6 life to much or too little? Is the card too weak or too strong? Do you think it could replace Path? Let me know below!

I'd much rather play Dismember than this card. Can be played in any deck, only makes you lose up to 4 life, and kills indestructible creatures. The loss of 6 life on your card is definitely waaaay too high.

This is nowhere near the level of path. It makes you lose more than a quarter of your starting life total, just so you can destroy one creature? Path exiles, and has a small drawback.

I agree that 6 seems like a lot I would much rather it be 3 life but the thing is that this could never replace path. The fact that path exiles is very very important.

Yeah, I feel that 3 or 4 life is where you want to be at.

They already made that card. It's called Vendetta.

Don't forget that Ulcerate is also in the format and sees zero play.

Ulcerate, Vendetta and Dismember all do this.

How about now?

MMM..... I'd consider playing this card as a 1-of. It doesn't replace path because exile is just so important and because most decks don't mind giving them another land, whereas 4 life is sizeable, especially if you're also running fetches/shocks/thoughtseize/dismember etc.

I mean what you've basically designed is Dismember that destroys instead of gives -5/-5. It's decent but 4 life is definitely something..... I'd play it as a 1-of.

Keeping track of whether a creature entered from the yard would be quite taxing and cause many more problems than it fixes. I advise adding "this turn" to that clause.

The reasons Dismember is a better card:- You can scale down the life cost if you have mana.- The base mana is colorless.- The effect will get past indestructible as creatures with zero or negative toughness are moved to the graveyard as a state based action.

If you want to improve that, I would improve the card's flexibility. Something like this;

"Put target nonland permanent in it's owner's graveyard. You lose life equal to it's converted mana cost and its controller draws a card."

I think that this card should be a slight improvement on path since black is supposed to be the king of creature removal. As it is now it seems worse. To be better I think it has to be a 1 cmc instant that removes a creature no-questions-asked with an almost laughable draw back. Imagine Tragic Slip but with more control over getting the -13/-13 than morbid gives you.
