Alternative Standard
Custom Cards forum

Hey guys, I had this really cool idea:
Basically Im making a discord for a set design thats supposed to be an alternative to standard. Essentially we design sets based on whats in the current standard and build cards based on what we want an alternative to standard being.
The discord has a few channels that I thought up already including:
Flavor: When were discussing a new set, we need a base story and some world building. Essentially well need to build a world and everything that goes in it. So thats what this channel is dedicated to.
Format potentials: Whenever someone posts a new card, we use these channels to discuss impacts on formats and decide if theyre fair.
Card submissions: This is where we submit cards for decisions, based on the mods and group discussion. While the mods will have some veto power, they have to discuss first.
Additionally, other rules about what are innapropriate cards, how many of any different type should we use, etc. Will be written soon. Im currently looking for mods, but I already have a few people in mind if they'd be interested.
Since were in the starting portion, Im gonna request that people interested in modding come message me on discord first to finish setting it up before we do anything else (DBPunk#0151).
Honestly Im interested in how they plan on doing it: is it gonna be a wizard plane mostly? Or like tons of sphinxes? Maybe like a world at war with two factions

I feel like Aftermath and Modular work, but were too close to cycling and surveil for it to not feel oversaturated.

I just got a notification I mentioned in the thread by dbpunk, but I do not see why? Creating a set is extremely hard and it takes 10 people at wizards to do. This is not a light task, but the end result can be extremely fun.

Hi Boza, sorry about that. I was actually hoping youd be down for it too and mentioned you in the initial post, then edited it because I thought it would be a weird thing to do (idk man quarantine is turning my anxiety a bit up).
I also realize it takes a while and a few people more than have so far joined (Im waiting for a minimum of ten people before really starting).

While I do not want to participate, I am willing to provide some advice:
-
Set the tasks and goals you want to achieve - for example, designing a set is an arduous task that starts with, as listed previously, a mechanic base or a world base.
-
Divide into teams - for example Creative, Development and Balance. However, since Dev and Balance teams won't have anything to work with, you should all start doing some Creative work and meet up and decide on something final. Once the exploration of the set is done - you have either your key mechanics, and/or your key story beats, world design elements you can split up in to creative and development team. When some development work is done (ie you have the first draft of every card in your set), only then can a Balance team do anything. By that time, the Creative will have little to do, so they should flow into other teams, etc.
-
Most importantly, make sure work is ongoing - set regular team meetings and a short status report on progress. Bi weekly is perfectly fine.

Boza thanks for the advice! I figured we should probably start with worldbuilding first to get a feel of what the world will be like.
Also Wolfpig is welcome if they're down.

TypicalTimmy good point. Like I think flavor design would probably change with each set. But I like the idea of doing a Bottom Up world again for the first set (namely because weve had several Top Down worlds recently with Theros, Eldraine and Ravnica)
