So I really liked Dance of the Dead back in the day with its comically long mechanic text and weird functionality. I was thinking of a way for it to be fair in a format like Modern. Here's what I came up with:
Circle of Resurrection 2
Enchantment
When Circle of Resurrection enters the battlefield, name a color and return target creature card from your graveyard to the battlefield under your control. You take damage equal to this creature's power. This creature has protection from the named color. If Circle of Resurrection is removed from the battlefield, Circle of Resurrection deals damage to you equal to returned creature's toughness.
I feel that the protection is a better buff, and the card had built in risk inherent to using it to bring back giant creatures from the graveyard consistent with Black's flavor. What do you all think?

Boza Sadly, Reanimate isn't modern legal. Currently the best reanimator spells in Modern are Unburial Rites, Gifts Ungiven, and Goryo's Vengeance

The wording is off. Effects that deal damage specify a source. In this case, either the creature or the enchantment is dealing damage. And it might be more flavorful if it were loss of life instead.

@ Epochalyptik I agree. It should likely be loss of life, as it also would be more flavorful as it wouldn't be able to be prevented.

CoR
Enchantment - Rare Cost:2B
2B: Return target creature card to the battlefield from the graveyard. It gains protection from the color of your choice. You lose life equal to that creature's power.
When a creature put on the battlefield with this card leaves the battlefield, lose life equal to that creature's toughness.
Similar to reanimate but repeatable, which makes it stand out of the crowd of reanimation spells.

Yeah, the problem is that is likely far too powerful for Modern. There also isn't exactly a crowd of reanimation spells in Modern.
The repeatable nature might be fair of the creature was only returned until end of turn however...

I think that the double lifeloss is punishment enough in modern. 20 health aint a lot. And the way I have costed it, it is 6 mana to return something the first time. An griselbrand, the common reanimation target will cost you 7 life to bring in and he does not have haste, so you can at most draw 7 with him for the cost of six mana.
The card seems OP at first, but the double life tax is keeping it in check.

I'm not really sure why it involves protection, to be honest.

The original Dance of the Dead which this was modeled after, gives a +1/+1 buff, and I figured that if you're increasing the mana cost and creating a life hit when it enters play and when it leaves, you should generally be able to have some resistance to removal, so that the double life hit wouldn't be as exploitable.

I suppose it's alright in terms of balance, but it doesn't make sense canonically. Maybe if you planned for the card to be Esper?
Don't forget also that you're now making the effect reusable. Plus, you're not always held to previous design standards. It's often good to use older cards only as guidelines for current design projects.

Epochalyptik Perhaps if the protection effect was an additional activated ability at the cost of ?

Well, Reanimate is cheaper on cost, harder to disrupt, and costs less life. I am not excited to play with this card. If it was an enchantment with 2B activation, it could work.
