Corallia

Custom Cards forum

Me and my best friends User:Darthsmitty and User:Ostrichman01 are designing our own little magic set because school is boring and we have too much free time.

The Plane: Corallia (Core-all-ee-ah)

Corallia is a very diverse plane, with all manner of creatures living on it. The main attraction to Corallia is Zintroh, the great abyss. A swirling void of black mana, Zintroh threatens to devour the plane whole. It is up to the planes 5, enemy-colored clans to prevent that from happening and keep their plane intanct.

The 5 clans of Corallia are:

--The Otaran (R/W Aggresive Flyers)

--The Uruk (B/W with a twist)

--The Myriak (B/G Artifacts)

--The ____ (U/R Undecided)

--The ____ (U/G Undecided)

New Mechanics:

--Scout (Whenever this creature attacks, you may look at the top card of the defending players library. You may put that card on the top or bottom of their deck.) New R/W Mechanic

--DefianceWhenever this creature becomes blocked, _ happens. New B/W Mechanic

--Scrapper X (When this creature dies, you may return an artifact card with converted mana cost X or less from your graveyard to your hand.) New B/G Mechanic

--No new mechanic for the U/G and U/R yet

More info coming soon, gotta take a test. :D

Scout is pretty much the same thing as fateseal but on attack. It also seems like a ability, not . Defiance is really similar to bushido. I like the idea of the abilities, but they pretty much already exist.

Really, this needs a lot of work. First off, I recommend you to read over some color pie articles - what each color can and cannot do. Secondly, the names could roll off the tongue a bit better. Having to spell out the pronunciation of the name of the plane is not a good way to start. Some quick pointers:

  • Making a swirling mass of black mana the centerpiece means your two tribes containing B have to be connected extremely well with it, flavorwise.

  • red is tertiary (if that) at flying, so making WR the fliers means you cannot have flying creatures in half those colors.

  • Interested in what the twist in BW is. There is lots of space for innovation in that pairing.

  • Typically, green does not care much about artifacts. You may be thinking of Glissa, the Traitor, but that has special exceptions due to flavor (Glissa Sunseeker).

  • Scout is actually Fateseal (Spin into Myth). Not a good mechanic and it is not something either W or R can do.

  • Defiance - not really a mechanic, but more of an ability word. Also out of the BW scope, unless you have something definitively BW that happens when the dude is blocked (like drain 1 life).

  • Scrapper is flavorful, but makes me convinced someone really wantsGlissa, the Traitor to be a mechanic, which is not very good. Having a mechanic that is extremely situational like that makes costing it very weird and the support for it too great. For this to work need good artifacts, cards that sac artifacts, cards that sac creatures... too much overhead.

tl;dr: I suggest to start at "The main attraction to Corallia is Zintroh, the great abyss. A swirling void of black mana, Zintroh threatens to devour the plane whole." and figure out what the tribes do A LOT later.

I understand that some of these abilities are very similar to other mechanics. We just wanted any ideas for the set, like abilities, lore, etc... We don't want criticism on what we have figured out so far. Yes, this is not the best block/plane. Yes, some of our ideas have already been made. But we are just looking for new ideas so we can further better what we have made. Another thing, we have dedicated too much time to change abilities now.

Sorry, I don't mean to be too harsh. If you guys want to suggest anything to better this idea, please say so

DarthSmitty, I am not telling you to change the mechanics, just change the name of the mechanics to the ones that already exist. For example, use fateseal as the R/W mechanic. You don't have to give the mechanic a new name if it already exists and has a name.

DarthSmitty, I am not trying to critisize too harshly, but what you have for now is straws in terms of set construction. You need to progress to sticks and then even bricks, if you do not want a big bad Critic Wolf to come and blow down your house.

You cannot expect us to even begin to develop a whole plane or even parts of it based on exactly one sentence about it. So, criticizing (I hope not too harshly) your current ideas is the only option left.

I'll make you a deal, any mechanic you guys make, send it via chat or on my wall and I will tell if it is in color pie or not and/or how to improve it. Deal?

I have an idea for your clan. Blue-green has a counters theme, so how about:

Name of mechanic: If you control a creature with a +1/+1 counter, do this.

It would be pretty much ferocious but requiring a creature with a +1/+1 counter, not a creature with 4 power.

I get that, and I think hats good. was just trying to make it try and stay away from Simic, but I guess that works. Now we just need to figure out the main theme like creature types and lore.

Here is an idea for the UR mechanic that is thematic and on color -

  • Abyssal - When you cast this card, choose a number, then exile the top card of your library. If the CMC of the card is lower than or equal to the chosen number, you may cast this card without paying its mana cost.

For example, say 0, and you may get a land for free; say 3, reveal a four drop, well, you no longer have a 4 drop.

I like it a lot. I'll figure the other details. Thanks

Here is something for UG:

  • Mana flow X - When you play ~, if you played it from your hand, choose 1: Untap up to X lands or Pay to draw X cards, then discard X cards.

This mechanic is also about choice and gives you early game with the untap and late game with the card filtering.

DarthSmitty says... #14

The only problem is that you could just guess 20, and then you get to cast basically any card.

Boza says... #15

OK, thinking of a rework to that.

  • Abyssal X - when you cast this spell, exile the top card of your library. You may play it this turn for its mana cost or .

The lower the value of X, the better.

Also, seeming to be on a roll, here some suggestions for the other two, with emphasis on choice:

No need to constantly reinvent the wheel.

  • WB - Pilgrimage - When ~ enters the battlefield, you may pay X and exile it. If you do, return it to the battlefield at the end of turn with X +1/+1 counters on this creature.

Late game mana sink. Great to put on something with ETB abilities.

CoolI don't know if I want to change W/B because I already spent so much time on it. But I like to New version of Abyssal
