DC Heroes and Villains MTG

Custom Cards forum

Hey so I just completed a Game of Thrones custom mtg set and wanted to get started on a DC comics set. So I want an opinion from all of you guys and gals. For those of you that know the heroes and villains, how would you divy up the colors? Nobility is white but I don't want every superhero being white and villain being black. So give me some thoughts? Also any input on the abilities and flavor for some heroes/villains is welcome as well :)

Thanks!

Well it wouldn't quite be so clear cut, for example Batman is really more of a Blue character, maybe even a little black. He's highly intellectual but it also extremely hell bent on revenge ie. stop all crime ever. He's selfish in his pursuits, uses fear as a weapon and indoctrinates orphans :P Batman's abilities should be linked to his ability to appear/disappear at a moment's notice (likely flash) and also be ready for any battle (probably s form of tutor effect mid combat).

The joker on the other hand is suuuuuuppper red black. Impulsive, anrachistic...if there was a ever a more re'/black character, I haven't seen it :P His effect should be unpredictable for the opponent and leave them making tough decisions, no answer of which is good.

Wonder Woman is pretty white but she also has a green side in that she really just wants to protect Themiscara and put things back to the way they "should be". She's a valiant hero, with the ability to make your opponent tell the truth (reveal their hand?) and deflect bullets (prevent a; non combat damage?

Superman is as mono white as they come. Like holy crap. If he doesn't have flying, I will be so disappointed in you :P

Hope that helps, I can think of more but I figured I'd get the big three (plus the joker XD out of the way first :)

What kind of scope do you want here? The DC Universe is kind of... big. Do you wanna only hit the big notes, or do you really really wanna go in deep here?

Trying to think of some characters for each color:

White: Superman, Lex Luthor, the Green Lantern Corps as a whole, Wonder Woman at times, usually Green Arrow?

Blue: Most magic-based heroes and villains kind of by default, Aquaman and his gang of villains kind of also by default, Raven, Cyborg, Grodd (though he's honestly kind of Simic - kick-start evolution through science).

Black: Booster Gold, Batman as a persona (Black means to White ends), Jason Todd/the Red Hood, Sinestro, the Scarecrow.

Red: The Flash (and a good chunk of that family to boot, including Reverse Flash to some extent), the Joker (though he's kind of black/red, to be fair), Superboy.

Green: Hawkman and Hawkgirl (save the whole bit that they fly, and depending on the incarnation), Poison Ivy, Beast Boy, Animal Man, any character that's ultimately a beast/ruled by instinct.

I'm looking to go in deep and make as many as I can come up with. So the big hitters and the others too. I didn't see Lex as a white though. White is usually about honor and things like that. He's a manipulative and scheming dude so I was thinking some blue for him maybe. Keep em coming!

Here's some custom Batman/Joker cards I made, heavily based on Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight (2008).

I had some issues coming up with good colors for Batman. He's definitely and I think at heart he wants justice, so he's too. I decided that depending on his mood he can be or at times too, and made two different versions:

Batman, the Dark KnightThe abilities on this card are meant to represent Batman's code of not killing anyone.

Batman, One with ShadowsThis version of him is meant to showcase his sneaky, stealthy side a bit better. Batman doesn't really fly, but he's hard to block.

The JokerThis one's a bit weird, but it's meant to show how he intimidates people by killing them off randomly and pitting friends against each other.

The Joker, Agent of ChaosThis one is meant to represent when the Joker forces Gotham to choose between the boat full of criminals and the boat full of good people.

For Green Lantern I was thinking of giving him a bunch of activated effects to represent the power ring. Made him green and white

why would Green arrow be white??????? HIS NAME IS GREEN ARROW.... That one seems kinda obvious, he would be green.... with reach. Or tap, destroy target creature with flying..... something like that.... ( BLue Green for the boxing glove arrow: U, tap: tap target creature (basically knock it out)....

my comment was in response to this one line right here, timckmorse:

"White: Superman, Lex Luthor, the Green Lantern Corps as a whole, Wonder Woman at times, usually Green Arrow?"

Oh right. Yeah I made him mono green. Makes more sense to me. Sorry about that lol.

how this for Green Arrow?

http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/complete/full/2015/5/2/1430596601218764.png

I made him G/W because i love the Boxing glove trick arrow (it's iconic to Green Arrow anyway)... his white activated ability is reminiscient of the arrow being used to knock some one out (in this case, tapping them)

Not bad. I'm thinking Mr Freeze is gonna be either mono blue or blue and red. A lot of the villains fit in black and blue so I'm trying to change it up. He will just have an advanced Sleep ability. Simple for him.

Mr. Freeze 4UU

Legendary creature: Villain Mr. Freeze.

Mythic rare

When Mr. Freeze enters the battlefield, tap up to 2 target permanents, they don't untap for as long as you control Mr. Freeze.

Whenever Mr. Freeze blocks or becomes blocked, tap that creature. It doesn't untap for as long as you control Mr. Freeze.

What are your guys' thoughts on the mechanics of it all. I know the usual abilities work but I was thinking I should have new ones for superheroes and villains. Any ideas?

Kcin says... #17

Ras Al'Ghul 2 G/B G/B

Mythic Rare

Legendary Creature: Villain

Deathtouch

Whenever a creature dealt damage by Ras Al'Ghul dies, put a 1/1 G/B Assasin token with deathtouch onto the battlefield.

Demon's Head: If Ras Al' Ghul or a token you control would die this turn, instead regenerate it. This ability only triggers if you control 5 or more Assassin Tokens.

Harley Quinn Legendary - Villain

Whenever Harley Quinn Attacks or Blocks you may stand up and yell "Babies!'. If you do put 2 2/2 Hyena Tokens into play attacking/blocking with Harley Quinn. Exile these tokens at the beginning of the next end step.

: If any card named Joker is in your GY or Exiled, you may put it in your hand.

"You thought I was just another bubble-headed blond bimbo! Well, the joke's on you, 'cause I'm not even a real blonde."

Great additions! Thanks guys. I'm trying to think up triggered abilities now. Like a bloodrush or inspired or something along those lines. But with heroes and villains. Was thinking birthright for superman but he's the only one that would affect. Any ideas?

For the joker, madden: whenever a +1/+1 counter is placed on a creature, double the total number of counters on that creature, then put a -0/-1 counter on it for each life lost by its controller this turn.

Thoughts?

May 3, 2015 4:24 p.m.

Kcin says... #22

The way I see madden work is as the creature goes mad, it gets stronger in power, yet weaker in toughness...

May 3, 2015 4:26 p.m.

A mechanic that single handily uses TWO different kinds of counters?! Ughhh o__o No thanks, that sounds all kinds of messy...it's like Frankenstein's Monster all over again...

As DC villains tend to instigate a lot of the fights they eventually wind up in with the various heroes, why not try the simple Provoke mechanic ala Goblin Grappler? It's simple, it's flavourful and it encourages villains like say The Joker to be aggressive and pick fights. Feel free to tweak it, maybe add a little flair to it.

May 3, 2015 4:35 p.m.

timckmorse says... #24

Provoke works well. I just want another name for it lol. Plus I want the heroes to have something. I was thinking of doing a Heroism and Villanous effect. It'd like Heroism 5 (if you control five or more superheroes, you may play this card without paying its mana cost) and same for villains. Then I was gonna do Neutrality for the flip floppers that can be either or.

May 3, 2015 4:47 p.m.

For the heroes...let's think...

Okay so they have the Hall of Justice, that could be some kind of tutoring mechanic like Captain Sisay but that's way too powerful to have as a mechanic intended to be used on multiple cards and should probably be reserved for one stand out "Hall of Justice" card.

What's a common trait of DC heroes...godlike power? Underwear on the outside? Being valiant and noble...unless they are Batman?

They could maybe have an inspiring ability, one that boosts civilians when they are nearby. Or maybe gives them permanent +1/+1 counters whenever they defeat a villain?

Why not have them simply gain a bonus whenever they get into combat with a villain? I know this plan flys in the face of my previous suggestion but what if the Heroes had an ability that encouraged them fight villains and defeat them, whilst the Villains all had a sort of sinister plot ability that happened over time, winning the game if the Heroes can't stop them??!

Okay so...here goes...

Fight for Justice

(Whenever this creature attacks, you may untap target creature defending player controls and it blocks this creature this turn if able. Whenever a Villain creature dealt damage by this creature dies, removal all Scheme counters from target land an opponent controls.)

Villain Mechanic

Scheme for Injustice

(When this creature enters the battlefield, choose a land you control. At the start of your upkeep, place a Scheme counter on that land.)

Each Villain creature will then have an ability where they can remove a set number of Scheme counters from a land to activate an ability ie. Destroy Target Hero, Draw 3 cards, Put 20 cards from your opponent's library into their graveyard, make an enormous token etc. etc.

Those are great! Love the idea. Just gotta figure out which creatures get which ability lol.

Any character specific suggestions?

Also anyone have a good idea as to what Talia al Ghul would be like as a card? I'm getting stumped with her.
