Evasion

Custom Cards forum

First of all, I am not sure if I posted this in the right Forum so if I didn't, I apologize in advance.

Doing an Origins draft, I saw Orchard Spirit and it made me think of a new keyword Magic could use. The keyword would be "Evasion" and it would mainly replace the text on Orchard Spirit.

What do you guys think?

Did you know that there is already a keyword that means "This creature can't be blocked except by creatures with flying or reach"?

Flying.

Why is orchard spirit worded so? It came out in Innistrad

flying means that the creature can also block other creatures with flying vs this which gives it flying when it is attacking but not blocking

Evasion is already the generic term for the family of abilities that restrict whether or in what way a creature may be blocked. It's also on its own a very bland term. Both of these factors make it a bad candidate for a keyword.

Additionally, it doesn't seem necessary to keyword this ability given how infrequently it comes up. Then again, menace is now a keyword.

VampireArmy: It's worded this way because Green technically doesn't get flying, but someone in development probably said that Green needed some more evasive creatures or 3-drops or something, so they put "flying, but not" on the card. It's a sneaky sneaky way to give Green flying. And according to Mark Rosewater, it honestly shouldn't be a thing, because Green doesn't get flying.

Green gets some kind of evasion but not flying. It cannot itself block flying creatures. I don't think it's an awful idea.

Well, green has reach and archers. Green is the "stay on the friggin ground" color. It normally doesn't get flying.

If green evasion is related to flying in any way, it's more likely to be an antithesis to it, like cards that can't be blocked by creatures with flying.

Green has insects though, and that's fine?

Like I do not think that evasion should be out of any colours pie in a definitive way. I agree that green doesn't have many fliers or otherwise evasive threats but it should get some. Red has dragons. Green has insects. Blue has birds, and rogues. White has pegasi too. Black has imps and other weird stuff.

Trample is green's evasion.
