Finishing the Swords cycle...

Custom Cards forum

So we have UG, UR, BG, RW, and WB as swords already. I think we all the suspects in question, but just in case/for reference: Sword of Body and Mind, Sword of Fire and Ice, Sword of Feast and Famine, Sword of War and Peace, and Sword of Light and Shadow.

For whatever reason, WotC never gave us the other 5 (if they exist in the multi-verse). Let's finish the cycle together!

As usually they are 3 drops, equip for 2, give +2/+2, and pro their respective color combo.

UW: Sword of Law and Order - Whenever equipped creature deals combat damage to an opponent you may untap all non land permanents you control and may tap down target permanent that opponent controls. Permanents tapped in this way do not untap during their controller's next untap phase.

UB: Sword of Cofusion and Coercion - whenever equipped creature deals combat damage to an opponent that player puts the top 3 cards of his or her library into his or her graveyard and discards a card.

I'm really stuck for the other 3. Help me out! RG can clearly burn a bit for red, or maybe allow you to loot. But green post combat effects seem weird. I thought about calling it Sword of Might and Rage, though.

GW has me completely stumped.

Is life drain and burn to vanilla for the RB one? I think so.

For green white, put two +1/+1 counters onto target creature you control and create two 1/1 white Human tokens.

RG: Sword of Rage and Might- Whenever equipped creature deals combat damage to an opponent return a card from your graveyard to your hand and Sword of Rage and Might deals 2 damage to target creature or player.

GW: Sword of Nature and Community- Whenever equipped creature deals combat damage to an opponent destroy target artifact or enchantment and put a +1/+1 counter on each creature you control.

RB: Sword of Hate and Anger- Whenever equipped creature deals combat damage to an opponent that player sacrifices a creature and draw a card. If you do, discard a card.

I think that UB sword could passably mill 10 like a Sword of Body and Mind.

Cool idea!!!

Just spit balling here but maybe..

the white/green could have a land ramp effect.

Red Black could be sac?

Red Green could be artifact or enchantment destruction or put a land from your hand into play?

That's really all I got :P

Sword of Unity and Growth

Equipped creature gets +2/+2 and has protection from White and Green.

Whenever equipped creature deals combat damage to a player, exile target Artifact or Enchantment that player controls and search your library for a Land card and put it onto the battlefield.

Equip:

  • The wording seems off to me but here is my take on a Sword. It was a quick throw together but I don't think any of the other Swords fetch land

EDIT: Didn't realize I got ninja'd till now but I now kind of think the Artifact/Enchantment hate on my version could be switched for "Put a +1/+1 counter on each creature you control" to more embody

Sword of Blood and Gore ([B/R])

When ~ deals combat damage to a player, choose up to 2:
-Target player draws 2 cards and loses 2 life
-Target player takes x damage, where x is the number of cards in his/her hand.

All cool ideas guys! I wanted to ramp but wasn't sure how bi like the search for a land a lot! Artifact/enchantment hate is great too! Milking more probably makes sense. Would it be too busted if I played a spell from their graveyard for free instead?

Oof_Magic says... #8

No. It's a pretty high variance effect that is linited by the opponent's deck so I don't think it would be.

First of all, cool idea.

However, I think an important thing most of you are missing here is that the Swords take two opposites and combine them together. Fire-Ice, Feast-Famine, War-Peace, etc. Most of your ideas for swords are combining things that are already kind of complementary. Also, try to keep the names short, 2 syllables tops, they will flow better.

The UW one could have a flicker theme of some sort to it:

Sword of Here and There

Whenever equipped creature deals combat damage to an opponent, exile equipped creature and return it to the battlefield under your control with ~ equipped to it, then return target creature to its owner's hand.

I will add more if I think of them.

No harm in ally color swords.

September 14, 2016 6:26 p.m.

You should edit the UB one slightly - right now, it's two negative effects for your opponent, whereas most of the Swords stick to one negative for your opponent, and one positive for you. Maybe you draw cards?

I don't think there's any harm in ally swords. It just feels off theme if they're not opposites. If you don't care about that feel free to ignore my suggestions.

RB:

Sword of Love and Hate

Whenever equipped creature deals combat damage to a player, gain control of target creature until the end of your next turn, then target player sacrifices a creature.

I'm not in love with this design just because it doesn't do anything if they have no creatures. But discard is already taken by Sword of Feast and Famine and I didn't want to repeat.

Sword of Love and Hate actually is flavorfully opposite, and well represented by what you designed. I like it Araganor.

Sword of Destruction and Rebirth

Equipped creature pro and .

Whenever equipped creature deals combat damage to a player, destroy target artifact that player controls and search your library for a forest and put it into the battlefield.

MindAblaze, what if it was destroy target land? Obviously hugely powerful, but I mean... they all are haha. Plus smash one ramp one is flavorful too. Could be a cool name somewhere to do with reaping/sowing razing/growing etc. etc.

Sword of Wisdom and Power

Pro

"...Scry 2, then that opponent may have you draw a card. If they don't, that player discards a card."

Jay I would love destroy target land, gain a land. The symmetry gives me a woody, but I think it would be disgusting to play against.

September 14, 2016 7:19 p.m.

Jay says... #17

What if it was destroy a nonbasic land, search for a basic land? A little more fair.

EDH staple?

September 14, 2016 7:21 p.m.

Jay says... #19

I mean, if anyone ever let a sword stay on board for more than one rotation haha. Even then I think it's very-powerful-not-broken. Would it be a shoe-in for decks that want swords? Fuck yea, but it wouldn't be close to bannable.

September 14, 2016 7:24 p.m.

Araganor says... #20

MindAblaze Thanks, I appreciate it. I just need a black effect that is bad for opponents that isn't discard.

I like the R/G sword, but I feel like the name could be better, it feels too long. Maybe you could call it Sword of Rise and Ruin? Although we're getting very close to Feast/Famine at that point.

The G/W one seems to be the hardest to design. The best I can come up with so far is Green's sense of freedom and instinct vs White's law and order.

Another potential angle is contrasting green's sense of individualism with white's sense of community. The problem there is coming up with a negative effect that is green and NOT smashing an artifact or enchantment.

Possible idea:

Sword of Many and One:

When equipped creature deals combat damage to a player, create 3 1/1 Soldier tokens, then you may have equipped creature fight target creature an opponent controls.

Jay says... #21

Sword of Pride and Prejudice

(Sword combat text) you may have target creature you control fight another target creature. Tap up to 2 target creatures you don't control.

I like where this is going

September 14, 2016 8:51 p.m.

aholder7 says... #23

so i'll take a stab at this.

/: Sword of Oak and Ash

Standard Sword Stuff

Whenever equipped creature deals combat damage to a player, search your library for a basic land and put it onto the battlefield and destroy target non-basic land. If you do, that land's controller may search their library for a basic land and put it onto the battlefield tapped.

(feel like this is a bit oddly worded, but more balanced than the versions put forward currently unless im ninjad)

/: Sword of Civil and Savage

Standard Sword Stuff

Whenever equipped creature deals combat damage to a player, you may put a 0/4 white human token with defender onto the battlefield and have target creature you control fight target creature you don't control.

(i was originally thinking a 2/2 knight with vigilance, but that felt too much like the wolf. also i thought about two 1/1 soldiers, but that felt a little overdone and didn't fit the idea of civility unless they had defender, which then made them feel kind of bad. the name is also a bit iffy. i wanted "civility/safety and savagery" but 3 syllables doesn't fit with the sword cycle)

/: Sword of Love and Hate

Standard Sword Stuff

Whenever equipped creature deals combat damage to a player, target creature your opponent controls cannot block until the end of your next turn and target creature you control gains deathtouch.

(this one may force some hard blocks, but im not sure if its on the same level as some of the other swords since theres no immediate impact)

/: Sword of Knowledge and Lies

Standard Sword Stuff

Whenever equipped creature deals combat damage to be player, scry 3 and fateseal 1.

(i wanted to shy away from discard and draw since both of those effects are already used. fateseal could be replaced by the actual rules text, but i just really like the idea of using the keyword. for those of you that don't know what it is, it's scry your opponent's deck. anything more than 1 felt way too powerful)

/: Sword of Dreams and Reality

Standard Sword Stuff

Whenever equipped creature deals combat damage to a player, you may put a copy of target creature you control onto the battlefield, exile that token at the beginning of the next end step and exile target creature your opponent controls, return it to the battlefield tapped at the beginning of the next upkeep.

(this one is oddly worded and im not sure how to make it fix the standard swords format. but seeing as it's midnight here. i really need to stop for the night.)
