Custom Cards forum

I made a complete Game of Thrones set. I would love to play this with friends but I need your help. It is a lot of cards to look through, but I want your input. If I put the houses in the wrong colors, tell me what colors you would put them in. Help me with the mechanics and flavoring if you want. I'm proud of the set and tell me what you think!

A Game of Thrones set sounds awesome. Looking through these cards shows how far behind I am in the show.

SPOILER ALERT!

Yeah my general rule of thumb is not to spoil things but the new season comes on a week from now...can't wait forever. proceed with caution

April 6, 2015 12:11 a.m.

I figured as much. I missed all of last season and some of the season before that.

Dual land with strip mine built in? Seems reasonable

April 6, 2015 12:23 a.m.

Jesus H christ the lands are insane. City of Brass with no drawbacks? Undying land that does two other things? DUAL LANDS WITH BUILT IN STRIP MINE?!?!

Man, that was a lot of cards. Congrats for the perseverance to finish that set, and your devotion to the Game of Thrones. I really liked a lot of the cards, there were some decent, powerful, and balanced ones. Some are a little over/under-powered,some are slightly off flavor wise, but the thing that threw me off the most was the rarities. a lot of cards were, I feel, under a lesser rarity than the power they demanded. Still, pretty damn solid.

And by the way guys, yes, serious serious spoilers in the set. Glad I'm caught up lol

Also, yes, dem lands

April 6, 2015 12:51 a.m.

It looks like a super cool set. My only issue is some of the color identities seem off at times. Some cards have colors added for what appears to be the sake of adding colors. The power level seems a bit high but I would totally buy a box

How would you guys balance the colors for the houses? What would you change in the flavor or in the power of certain characters? I'm constantly editing these things and want them to be represented in the best way possible. What's overpowered and underpowered here? And yeah the lands will be getting redone for sure.

April 6, 2015 2:48 a.m.

I would suggest making some of the lands legendary at least.

April 6, 2015 6:43 a.m.

A large majority of this is off color. By a lot. This set is.. broken, unless only played against itself.

April 6, 2015 8:08 a.m.

Well first of all, congrats on finishing an entire set! 300+ is a lot!

Second, the lands are OP as f***. In fact, I'm going to say that most of the set is extremely powerful (The Eyrie??) so it would be pretty impossible to play against any other set. To be absolutely critical, I'll also point out the fact that about half the cards are rares and half legendaries. But all in all congrats.

i like a lot of the flavour. a few of the images were slightly lower quality but whatevs.

As for the colour identity 5 colours for 7 houses is hard to manage so i feel that they could all be dual colour with several other prominent houses taking the last 3 slots in the cycle.

Stark - Green/Black, pretty standard i think. Natures cycles, solemnity.

Lannister - White/Black, wealth, sacrifice, cunning, debts they are almost the orzhov.

Baratheon - White/Red, All about brute force and armies

Arryn - blue/white - a little crazy and prone to waiting for opponents to act before the react

Targareon black/red, dragons. Enough said

Martell - red/green, heat, passion, poison, vengence. Sounds like red green to me

Tyrell - green/white, airy fairy nature family. large supplies of land and farming. sounds like selesnya.

Greyjoys blue/black, a theme you already have but just listing it

Tullys - blue/green, again you had this and i agree

nights watch - blue/red, they have a lot of contraption, siege engines, and weapons. A bit like the izzet.

As for lands, many are overpowered but i like how some basic lands get legendary names just for flavour.

One card in particular that struck me as broke af was balon greyjoy. The mechanic doesnt feel right but his tap ability will always be active because he counts all 5 symbols of devotion for his own check.

I really enjoyed the flavour and i respect the effort youve put in. I;d love to offer more input and maybe help out.

I'll take all the advice you have. If you have specific ideas for cards, let me know!

I disagree with stark as bg. I think gw is better. Historically the Starks have been relatively peaceful amongst the 7. They are also honor bound as seen in jon snow ned and robb which is white.

Also I think the nights watch can be bw since most were criminals (b) but are now bound by law to the wall (w). They may even be wub now that I thin of it.

April 6, 2015 1:07 p.m.

Also I love the flavor texts they fit so nice

Stark as GW is fine but in terms of a cycle, where do you then fit The Tyrells?

April 6, 2015 3 p.m.

xlaleclx says... #23

GW seems extremely off for stark

April 6, 2015 3:51 p.m.

Tyrells are definitely green but I can't peg a second color. I would say blue since they all appear cunning (at least in the books).

White for Starks is honor and duty. Ned joined Roberts rebellion because it was the right thing to do. The Starks are also green in the respect that they follow the old gods were are literally trees and have the ability to become one with nature as a warg/ green seer. I'm not using selesnya as my base for green white because Starks aren't selesnya and there's more to the color identity than selesnya.

I would like a better explanation for why the Starks belong in black. Arya may fit in black but none of the others really do.

Black mana comes from: swamps (the swamp lands around the neck) as well as crypts (under winterfell and scattered around the northa)Green mana comes from: forests (standard all over the north)

Ned stark revered the old gods and the cycles of life and deathRobb stark has a pension for killing and bringing death with him through war.

ALso i dont see the tyrells as cunning. The only one who was remotely clever was the queen of thorns and it was never revealed that she even had anything to do with joffreys murder in the books.

Personally, I like where you were going with devotion. I would scrap Magic's existing color pie altogether and assign each color or guild to a House. You could use hybrid symbols to represent a house, even. So house Lannister could be , for example, and "devotion to " would mean "devotion to Lannister."

Lands (or territories) would tap for two colors, representing where they were physically in the world (which I think you already established).

I'd also recommend adding low-casting cost cards to represent the average soldiers, people, and events in GoT. Stuff like 2/1 vanilla creatures for 1 CMC to represent Stark soldiers. You have a few already, but it'd be nice to see more 1 and 2 drops to help with building decks for a standalone GoT set.

My suggestions would only work with this as a set not intended to mix with regular MtG, but I think that's what would give you the best results.

Okay here's what I've come up with.

Stark - GW because of the whole honor thing while also being a part of the north with the old gods. Arya may incorporate some B though.

Lannister - B for the most part with some additional color depending on character. Jaime may incorporate some white in later seasons. Cersei will either stay mono or add some blue for being conniving and scheming.

Targaryen - RB because Dragons.

Baratheon - GR. Because I always pictured Robert as a sort of Borborygmos Enraged of the sort. Stannis will probably add some black for the leeches and Red lady.

Dothraki is clearly red and green.

Nights watch is Blue and red. which makes sense but can be debated.

Wildlings - no idea. Maybe green and black.

Tyrell - blue and white

Martell - green and red because poison.

Greyjoy - blue and black

Any ideas you have debating a character's abilities, please share.

What do you guys think I should change the actual Game of Thrones card to? I want a powerful enchantment that requires all five colors and can have a win condition but has to stay within the events of the show/books. I can't think of one right now. Any ideas?
