Getting Into Card Creation
Custom Cards forum

Hello All, With recent drastic changes in pretty much every format due to companions, I see a lot of friends who are distraught and frustrated with wizards and mtg. For me, this got me to think more seriously about actually designing cards. I have been thinking about card design for a while, but never got past writing my ideas down. Now, I think I should follow through for a few reasons:
-I think that doing this could help me to better understand and articulate what I want in a game like Magic.
-This would give me material that I could do art for, and give me an excuse to practice.
-I love game design, and doing this could really be a cool way to learn what goes into solid design.
All of this being said, I have no idea where to start. On top of that, I don't want to be putting a lot of work into making cards and just throwing them into the void, so finding a community seems paramount to following through with this. Does anyone have any tips? Let me know!

Hey! I have just started a custom card project as well and as x12721 said I have found Maro's articles super helpful, although they are often more focused towards set creation than individual card creation. Three of the best are here, here and here.
In terms of ideas, I have found Planesculptors is a good source of inspiration. I would definitely check out reddit for a custom card community as well.

For me, I've found that Maro's articles on set design are super helpful as a jumping off point. Beyond that, r/CustomMagic is a gold mine
