Help me Fix a Broken Card
Custom Cards forum

Hello.
As happens often, I was brewing a custom card late at night for my Legacy Horizons 2 set and accidentally created a monstrosity.
In case you can't tell what the issue is, think Faithless Looting into Enter the Infinite or Expropriate. Loop ad infinitum.
I. Uh. Am normally decent at fixing broken cards I've made, but I'm at a bit of a loss for this one. How could I change this card to make it better?
I want it to stay in the same design space as Animate Artifact, Animate Wall, and Animate Dead, as well as this other card I made.
First thought is to put a mana value restriction, maybe MV 4 or less if you want to make it single use or MV 2 or less if it's repeatable, on the exiled sorcery. (I'm eyeballing numbers for this. Maybe tweak them up if it's specifically a high-end card for Legacy.)
seshiro_of_the_orochi's fix was my second thought.

A good good reference for this would be Magar of the Magic Strings. SUPER fun!!

My first thought (before seeing the revised version) was to change the casting cost from to and have it only be able to target a spell with mana cost X-or-less.
The upside would be still getting to do something obnoxious if you have enough mana. The downside (compared to the revised version) would be that it’s costing you more mana to target a 2-3 mana spell. I’m not sure which way you’d want to head design-wise

I prefer the current method as it feels a bit more red.

I might be being a bit of a party pooper here, but the original kinda strikes me as a more pushed version of Living Lore.
I think the above suggestion of a mana value restriction would differentiate it enough, as well as justify its low mana cost so you can't just cheat huge spells turn after turn really early on.

How about this:
Whenever ~ deals combat damage to a player, you may sacrifice it. If you do, you may cast the exiled card without paying its mana cost.
You still get to freecast it, buts it's harder to break. Also, it's on flavour with sorceries being powerful one-time spells instead of perservering, enchantment-like magic. And if you need the beater, you can keep it.
