Maniacal Wager - RB

Instant

As an additional cost to Maniacal Wager flip a coin.

If you win the flip, target attacking creature gains +5/+0 , First Strike , and Deathtouch

If you lose the flip, Maniacal Wager deals 5 damage to you. This damage cannot be prevented.

I could just see myself holding 4 of these in hand, casting them all, and losing all of the flips to deal 20 damage to myself...

I don't even drink. You're spark might have ignited in the jungle bruh but mine ignited in the heat of bloodlust. Haha

I think it needs to give trample as well. Otherwise its just too bad to even be playable. Flipping coins is never good, and when you're wasting card slots on it, it better be damn powerful. Also, the fact that it requires a creature to be on your battlefield (and presumably attacking to get max value) is another knock against it

Gah, didn't see the attacking clause. Well still, my answer doesn't change. In fact, it makes it worse because it is less flexible

Trample isn't exactly a rakdos thing though. It's not supposed to be that good anyways. Encourages blitzing and insanity. Flavor before use here

Cryptborn Horror? Rakdos the Defiler? Goblin Deathraiders? If I'm ever going to consider playing a card that lets my opponent choose, or is left up to chance, it had better be worth it.

I suppose so. I was going for more the chaotic rakdos. Replace deathtouch with trample and you basically got a good card

Sorry meant to say replace first strike. I'm tired lol

Heh, I never said to remove first strike or death touch. Why not all 3? The downside is pretty severe, I don't see why the upside can't be too

You don't need it to have "as an additional cost to cast flip a coin" you can just have the card read "Flip a coin, if you win do X, if you lose do Y." Makes it much cleaner.

Following up on JWiley129's point: it's really a design choice, I guess. Do you want this to be able to be countered before or after the mode is chosen?

As an additional cost, the mode is decided before the spell is resolved, right? So if you were running Grixis, you could just counter the 5 damage if you lose the flip. Likewise, your opponent could counter it knowing that you won the flip.

As part of the resolution, I feel it stays true to what you intended. Something unknown, something random. Sure, someone can still counter it or interact by killing the attacking creature, but they would have possibly wasted a card to prevent you from dealing 5 damage to yourself; or they will have not countered it and have to deal with a +5/+0 whatever-extra-abilities-you-wanted-to-add. I guess removal would still be an option (unless it was power-restrictive removal like Reprisal), but countering would not.

I didn't even think of that when I first looked, but it's definitely something to consider.
