Idea for a Squirrel Commander
Custom Cards forum

For those of you unfamiliar with me, I have a soft spot for squirrels in MTG. One of my first decks as a young kid centered around Squirrel Nest and Squirrel Mob . Unfortunately, the tribe only receives (black bordered) support once-and-a-while. I currently have a squirrel deck helmed by Patron of the Orochi , but I'd like to see a dedicated squirrel commander.
It is my personal belief that if squirrels are to ever get a legendary creature, it will be in the upcoming Kaldheim set. Though little is known about Kaldheim yet, one thing is for certain, it will be a Norse mythology theme. That theme opens up the possibility of a card pertaining to the god Ratatoskr. For those unfamiliar with the god, Ratatoskr is essentially a messenger god who travels the world tree, Yggdrasil. He exchanges messages between the eagle at the top of the world tree and the snake below the tree. Like most squirrels, he is also kind of a dick.
Now on the rare occasion WotC creates a squirrel related card, they tend to do it in a tangential way. Most squirrel related cards create tokens while most creatures who care about squirrels are Druids. The only two actual (black bordered) squirrels are Squirrel Mob and Krosan Beast . With that in mind, here is my idea for a legendary squirrels-matter creature:
Skúmr, Voice of Ratatoskr - 2
Legendary Creature - Human Druid
Forests you control have "tap : Create a 1/1 green Squirrel creature token. Activate this ability only once each turn"
1/3
I opted for a different route than the traditional +1/+1 lord. Thoughts, comments?

dbpunk - I wanted to create a "big- Squirrel Nest " effect that couldn't be abused in an infinite combo (i.e. Earthcraft ). Even without breaking it in a combo, two activations in one turn with something like Patron of the Orochi is still insanely strong. Hence the additional clause, but I see your point about it being rather confusing.

Personally i think giving it to all of your forests is way too good.
Thats a heck of a lot of tokens each turn. Just activate at the end of your opponents turn, take your turn as normal or make more squirrels, untap with Seedborn Muse Paradox Engine etc., then do it all over again as needed.
I like the idea of providing squirrel nests but all your forests just seems too much. What if he had an ETB ability that turned lands into squirrels for a turn? It would make your commander your alpha strike once you had enough squirrel pump on board or a big enough board to go wide.
When ** enters the battlefield each land you control becomes a 1/1 squirrel creature until the end of turn. They are still lands.
You could play it with things that benefit land creatures as a sub theme? Dunno just trying to come up with something that offers you a route that isn't just "Go wide with squirrels"
Or if you really want tokens it could just put a 1/1 squirrel into play for each forest your control when it enters. That way it could still be crazy good with enough lands, and could be bouncable for more squirrels... or maybe just have it on cast so it doesn't get outta hand... I don't know im just spit balling here but I think mine would look like this:
Skúmr, Voice of Ratatoskr - GG
Legendary Creature - Human Druid
Whenever you cast Skumr create a 1/1 green squirrel creature token for each forest you control.
Sacrifice a Forest: Return Skumr to its owners hand.
2/2

Hmm so similar to Jolrael, Empress of Beasts but for squirrels...I can dig that. I actually used to have a Jolrael deck at one point so I would be totally on board with animating lands. That would be an interesting, non-generic route to go.
ETB making squirrels would follow in the the path of the two hermits so I could see that as an option.

If it's a tap ability, does it really need the once per turn clause? I mean, it's not broken without it, and honestly I could see someone getting confused and thinking "Oh, that means I can only make one squirrel per turn."
