Kaalia varients. 1 for Angels, 1 for Demons.

Just thinking it would be fun to make some Kaalia varients since her EDH decks typically lose to either a well timed kill spell or mana denial super hard.

Kaalia, of the Heavens _ww

Legendary Creature - Human Cleric

When Kaalia of the Heavens enters the battlefield choose one:

Target creature you control gets +4/+4 and flying until end of turn and becomes an Angel in addition to it's other types.

Destroy target non-angel creature an opponent controls.

P/T = 2/4

Kaalia, of the Damned_

Legendary Creature - Human Cleric

Whenever a nontoken creature you control dies put an X/X flying Demon token creature into play where X is twice that creatures converted mana cost.

P/T = 3/3

Kaalia, the Battleborn_rr

Legendary Creature - Human Soldier /Warrior (not sure)

Shroud , Haste

At the end of each combat put a +1/+1 counter on this creature.

P/T = 3/3

So I think the first one is ultimately to slow for modern. I mean it would be great to curve it out after something like playing a bunch of Champion of the Parish but since it costs four Remand just pretty much says "screw you". I could see it played "in" a commander deck but I wouldn't use it as the commander.

The second one I think has much more promise in Commander, and could possibly be to strong. Interestingly enough I think it's the last thing mono would want. Hear me out. A mono deck doesn't die beacuse it's horrible at staxing, it dies because it can't deal with so many things. To that effect the second one would be great in a Mardu or Jund stax deck and ok in an Abzan deck. 2x the CMC is pretty strong, but prevents token abuse (looking at you Ghave, Guru of Spores).

The third one is exactly what r needs. I am tempted to make it cost triple r instead of rr but am not sure. This third Kaalia learns from battle whether or not she is participating and eventually will join the fray and kick some major but. Very cool, very r, also helps you go "big red". A very good Voltron commander with the shroud.

Of course Kaalia is also pretty great with dragons so here's a mono r version that deals with that.

Kaalia, Champion of Dragons ____r

Legendary Creature - Human Shaman

Flying, Protection from Dragons

Dragon spells you cast cost less to cast.

You may cast Dragon Creature spells you own from Exile.

P/T = 2/2

So, looking forward to hearing whether or not you would play something like these cards, what parts make you not want to play them, and of anything you could think of that makes them glaringly OP (and by that I mean things as strong as a turn 1 flying 6/6 lifelink, or Wasteland + Crucible of Worlds T2)

enpc has pointed out that without the wording "nontoken" on Kaalia, of the Damned, just Blood Artist + Kaalia + token dying = infinite win. I have changed the wording so that it doesn't work with tokens.

has given me the correct format for Kaalia of the Heavens ability: "Destroy target non-angel creature an opponent controls."

The black Kaalia would be played as another combo engine card in black decks. Also the fact that you win the game with just it and Blood Artist and another creature dying with the current wording of the card.

It took me some serious thinking to figure out what you mean. Now I see it.

I suppose I could just make her say nontoken creatures. This is probably one of the reasons they use that wording already.

Eh but it own't work with just any other creature dying. The dying creature has to have a CMC of 0 because then a new creature with P/T = 2x CMC0 will enter the field. Since this new creature will have a CMC of 0 it will die and this repeats over and over.

Now if the creature was a non token it wouldn't repeat. If say, Glissa, the Traitor dies to combat tricks (yes, very very good combat tricks) then I will get a 6/6 token. Now I need some way to kill that token for it to go infinite. Either way, it'll be changed to "nontoken"

Really cool card designs. I have a couple of suggestions to make though.

First of all, the black one seems way too overpowered in Commander. For every 5 drop that dies you get a 10/10 flying demon. That's game breaking. It should be equal to CMC not twice that to make it more balanced. Although flying still pushes the power-level a lot.

Secondly, red doesn't usually get shroud, so for the red Kaalia you should either remove/replace it with another ability or I suggest you change it with the ability found on Thunderbreak Regent for a similar effect, maybe make it deal 5-10 damage to make it stronger. That way you keep the ability(kind of) without violating the color-pie.

Lastly, the wording on the white one is a bit off. It should read "destroy target non-angel creature an opponent controls".

That's all. :)

enpc and kengiczar, there's also Ornithopter and its ilk so you may want to just change it to creatures with cmc 1 or greater.

@ AngryKitten - Since it says nontoken wouldn't Ornithopter dying with Kaalia of the damned just cause you to get a CMC and P/T 0 token once, then the chain ends? I'm ok with people paying 0 mana for a 0/2 then getting a 0/0 token when it dies with BLood Artist on the board which would lead to 2 Blood Artist triggers.

@ Babafaba -

I think your right about the P/T of the token creature. I'll make it equal to for now until I can think of a better way to do it.

On the shroud, you're right, it is a color pie break. But it's also incredibly stupid that WotC never gave r any shroud yet pampered all of the other colors with it: http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Search/Default.aspx?action=advanced&text;=+[shroud]&type;=+[%22Creature%22]

If I did make the commander not have shroud I would rework it entirely. Something like Oloro, Ageless Ascetic where she does things in the command zone.

Um...yes, kengiczar, you are very correct :P

I knew it sounded weird to me when I typed it.

Anyway, one thing you could do is give it some sort of specified protection instead of Shroud (red examples: Skirk Fire Marshal and Akroma, Angel of Fury). Maybe even word it similarly to Raiding Party? Just an idea.
