Mage's Gift
Custom Cards forum

New custom card I made. Meant for my modern deck. Too powerful? Not gonna lie, I really only built it for the blue effect, but felt having just that wasn't flavorful enough. Right now I'm really excited with its potential. It does a lot of critical things for my current deck including:
It hits Master of Waves
It can bounce enchantments
It can pseudo-counter Path to Exile by bouncing the targeted creature
Blind discard is always nice on upkeep.
and abilities were tacked on to allow all mages to use it, because flavor. If anyone has ideas of what could be better and make the card more balanced, I'm all ears. The UBR effects are locked I think, but GW are things I made up. I am considering changing the G to be 'target creature gets +3/+3 until the end of the turn'. All thoughts are welcome, although I like the idea of artifact hate.
Thanks for reading!

I think it might be worded like Firespout, maybe written as:
- If was spent to cast Mage's Gift, you gain 4 life.
- If was spent to cast Mage's Gift its owners hand.
- If was spent to cast Mage's Gift, target player discards a card
- If was spent to cast Mage's Gift, deal 2 damage to target creature or player.
- If was spent to cast Mage's Gift, destroy target artifact. No more than one mode may be chosen for Mage's Gift.

The only problem with that wording is that it's too long. The text doesn't fit on the card and mtgcardsmith doesn't resize it to fit. I made it on another site and now it all fits. I re-did the text and I think it's a little better, but there's still room for improvement.

I can't change my link above to work (it just goes to a blank page) for the new version of the card, but here's the link:

I agree with AwesomeName however I think it would still be pretty balanced if you didn't put the cap on it. I feel like any deck that could make you (let you) spend multiple colors would benefit from it, and why not. Each mode could still only be chosen once, so at least that would be limited. Neat though.

I see your point. I suppose if you're going to go through the work to spend additional mana on it, you should get additional reward. Although I could see it having some serious potential for abuse with Trinisphere or Thalia, Guardian of Thraben. At 2 mana, you can get a Kolaghan's Command discard burn and at 3 mana you can get Kolaghan's Command in Jund colors with every ability except returning a creature. Then again, it doesn't fit into any deck that could abuse it and it is still a ton of work to make it go. Let's try it! It makes the wording much easier.
I might change the green effect to be 'target creature gets +2/+2 or +3/+3 until the end of turn. It seems more green to me. But artifact hate is kinda fun I must say. Any thoughts anyone.

I think they are both very green things so either one is okay, I think the way it is is more of a balanced effect on a modal card.

Cool. I have to say I really like it the way it is right now too. It's extremely playable in my grixis deck, probably playable in modern Jund (more mainboard artifact hate, extra removal through burn, and instant speed discards are all things they'll pay 1 mana for), perhaps playable in modern Abzan.
The blue effect on its own is better than any other 1 mana bounce spell, yet it's still pretty underwhelming which makes me wonder why that effect hasn't been printed at 1 mana instant.
If the was replaced with , it would be extremely broken. But also a ton of fun.
I have decided to make it a colorless card because screw Master of Waves.
