My Custom Painted Skyknight Legionnaire
Custom Cards forum

Recently i had my first attempt at extending the boarders of a magic card. I've play around with painting magic cards before, but this is my first extended art attempt. I choose Skyknight Legionnaire randomly from my card box as a test. What do you think?
klone13 Cheers :) If anyone has any professional tips for making the process easier or to make it look better feel free to comment :D

Hey no problem. It's always cool seeing what people can do with their cards when it comes to painting them.

VampireArmy Just used acrylic paint. First did an undercoat of white then painted over that.

Noice :T I used to have a friend who did tokens with that. I'd be wary of sleeves. Too tight and the paint chips off. I think there's a way to prevent that though

I'm not a fan. Good extensions are when you can't tell where the card would've ended and the boarded would've began. On yours, you can see the exact rectangle where the border used to be. You need to blend the actual art with your extension so it looks more natural. I mean look at the spear (Spear thing? Whatever the weapon is), the one in the art is a far cry from the one in the extension.
Ok for a first effort, but you have a ways to go.

In terms of color matching, you did alright, and one of the best ways around the obvious original art problem is to paint over the original art a bit. How does the back look? Also, when you go to mix and match colors, use like a small tablet of wood or plastic, which will help you draw out your colors and find the best match. When it comes to text boxes, once yiu have noticed where you have gone over, wet a toothpick and try to take that bit off of the boxes. Your finished product will look much more professional.
All in all, id give this a five out of ten. Good for a first shot, but theres a lot of room for improvement as well. Just keep at it, you'll get there.

Good job for a first try definitely. I think you should try and focus on blending the original art with the outside box area a bit more. I use multiple coats of basepaint where needed until I cannot see the art box anymore. I also dont use white basepaint, but simply use a roughly similar color to the art that is in that portion of the card. Oranges and yellows to go with Skynight there. And painting over the original art around the edges is almost always a must in order to get a subtle transition.

Looks great! Unfortunately I can still see the old card border (a faint white line) so in your next attempt I would try to fix that, better than anything I could ever do though, nice job!

For a first proper try I would say good job! Sure, there are many things that could be done better but you gotta start from somewhere, right? Old borders are the biggest problem area here. I would do the same what ThatJunkMage suggested.
This actually make me want to try this myself too :) Maybe some day! What kind of tools did you use? Other than acrylic paint I mean.

TurboFagoot Cheers for the feedback, twas my first try.
ThatJunkMage Thanks again for the feedback, a tooth pick could be a good idea!
awesomeguy37 Yea will try to fix that next time, Cheers Bud!
Luutamo Cheers dude! I have an ice cream lid to mix colours on, but you can use basically anything, i use a variety of 6 brushes, small brushes mostly. A hair dryer for drying paint quickly, Masking Tape for doing the under coat, water and paint. Nothing too crazy, just the basics :)
