Nevinyrral

Custom Cards forum

I've recently started making custom proxies for my friends and I. Rule is: if you have the card you can have the proxy. Then we started BSing and talking about making our own Legendary creatures (and then maybe have them become Planeswalkers later) and one guy sticks out to me: Nevinyrral.

He's the Necromancer's necromancer. He literally wrote the handbook. I am currently in love with my newest deck, a Ghoulcaller Gisa zombie swarm deck and was thinking that he could have a similar but better (albeit a more expensive) ability with an extra bit of coolness sprinkled in because he's f'n Nevinyrral son!

What do you guys think his cost, abilities, and P/T should be?

Well.. If he is the necromancer, then.. hm.. Would you think he's more toward the powerful side, or simple side?

CharlesMandore Ancient magic is always supposed to be the strongest magic, isn't it?So he should be like one of the first planeswalker i think. Ageless, because of his abilitys and hella strong.

There are a lot of characters throughout MTG history that I believe should have been Legendary at the very least. Uncle Istvan, for starters. As for Nevinyrral, I'm pretty sure he should have some creature destruction abilities as well as reanimation. He is the one who invented Nevinyrral's Disk, after all.

What do you want the CMC and devotion to be at? That'll better determine his (it is a he, right?) abilities.

I think a simple ", Sacrifice a creature: Return target creature from grave to battfield" would sefice. But that focuses on the Necromancer aspect and less in the Disk.

Well, he did rule Urborg before he destroyed it with the disk so I'm thinking mono-black, rakdos, or grixis. Urborg was a city sitting on an island in a volcano. I'm leaning more toward mono-black out of personal taste but I'm open to discussion especially because multicolored cards are usually discounted cmc-wise.

I am wanting to play more into his necromancer fluff but you guys do have a point about his destructive aspect because of flavor text that says people who read stuff that he wrote become destructive themselves.

Something like pay certain amount and tap to destroy target permanent. Combine that with a Grave Betrayal type effect for creatures and that sounds good.

Maybe he could reanimate a permanent that is sent to the grave for X life, where x is the converted manacost?

Sounds like Geth, Lord of the Vault but kills the crap out of you.

How about sac a permanent to destroy a target permanent of the same type. If creatures are destroyed this way put X Zombie tokens into play where X is the power of each creature killed this way.

Abilities:

, tap: Destroy target creature.

Zombies you control get +1/+1.Whenever a creature an opponent controls dies, put it onto the battlefield under your control, it becomes a black zombie in addition to its other colors and types.

3/4

That is exactly what I was thinking.

I like it better as a 3/4 because it balances the power level. Most creatures with spectacular abilities get the draw back of being less powerful in p/t. being 3/4 keeps him out of bolt range but doesn't keep him from other forms of removal, Dismember should still be able to kill him in my opinion.

Where is your artist credit? Kilrane. For shame!

I looked at other CMC 8 creatures and 4/6 is on the low end of average P/T.

NecroPony This is just the prototype, I haven't decided on the picture yet.

There are some more in the running:

I like the tome Nevi.

So keep in mind that Griselbrand has the same casting cost, and has really decent combat stats, plus an awesome ability.

Additionally it's Grave Betrayal on a stick. I don't know much about combining enchantments, abilities, and creatures.

I like the tome picture too. The high contrast light colors will make a good looking foil.

Griselbrand makes you pay 7 life. It has an extra cost to get the good stuff, that's how black is. When there's no drawback like that they take it out of P/T. Also I believe that Nevi should not be a zombie himself or change it to "Other zombies you control-"

An 8 casting cost Commander with 4 devotion is a bit of a down side. I agree with making him a typical Lord in that he affects others and not himself.
