New Land Concept

Custom Cards forum

I've been wondering about dual colored lands for a while as I'm trying to build a custom set. I have a question would a full set of lands like these in all the dual color combos break modern?

I personally don't think so, but I'm not a modern player. It'd definitely be 1-of's replacing shocklands for sure though, and edh players would hog these like crazy, but I still would like to see these. :)

1-of these in every 2+ color deck? Yup, broke. It's like giving the ABUR lands to modern but on the restricted list. Way too good for modern.

These would be nice but would essentially make decks like burn and aggro less viable. They'd also add some more consistency to mana bases everywhere. Combo and control would be stronger. I'd be really hesitant to make them modern legal. Oh, and EDH players would cut you for these.

Look at it this way: three color decks already only one one or two copies of their respective shocks. this is just gravy in modern.

As an aside, you aren't the first person to suggest something like this. And these won't be printed ever because they are too close to the original dual lands, which are on the restricted list.

it seems like a cute workaround, but really just creates something that is too powerful for the intended format.

Too broken because the 1-of restriction isn't very relevant due to fetchlands.

Gotcha. It was worth a shot. If it weren't a Forest Plains, would it be okay?

Anything that enters untapped without a drawback and gives you more than one type of mana without a drawback is way too close to the original dual lands to be acceptable.

I have a different quibble with these lands I'd like to raise: a typical set is 240-260 something cards, and about 15 of those are mythics. I presume these lands make up a cycle, so that's at least 5 mythic slots taken up. What about your planeswalkers and cool creatures and spells that you want to design? There's a reason the money nonbasics tend to be rares (as well as making the ones that matter to your colours more available)

Also flavourwise I'm not a fan. It's a Forest/Plains, whoop-de-doo. Ravnica has tons of those. Whi is it legendary? If it is legendary and mythic, why doesn't it do something cooler than just tap for mana? It doesn't speak mythic even though it is arguably of mythic power level; it has the same problem as Lotus Cobra and Warren Instigator in that, though great cards and worthy in terms of power, just don't look, feel or seem all that mythic.

Consider making your Forest/Plains a rare but obviously do a drawback, and maybe change it up by adding a different drawback than the Shocklands? Though, having more dual-basics around would be pretty cataclysmic. I don't know Modern all that well.

Well, the EDH player in me would sacrifice a goat to have this exist, as well as the rest of the cycle. The Modern player in me would be very unhappy with them being in Modern, you would have to remove the basic land types if you wanted these to be fair enough for Modern. Still, R&D tries to make dual/tri lands have downsides, and this land has no downsides other than running 1-2 in your deck instead of a solid 4.

This would pretty much be a functional reprint of ABUR duals. It is too powerful, and would not happen.
