New Set Dedicated to Walkers

Custom Cards forum

I have been developing a new set that is focused around planeswalkers. Here are my current cards. I'm curious what people think of my cards so far, are some of them overpowered, underpowered, is it a balanced set, are the wordings correct?

Ebenar is sick, but OP imo.

klone13 Yeah, it's really hard to design a true colorless planeswalker.

the RW one is unreasonable over powered

xlaleclx how so? If you leave a comment like that, you should be courteous enough to explain why you think so?

Martha is a really awesome plains walker I just feel that the 0 maybe a little harsh

It's a very interesting concept, but some of the cards are a bit too good. Ebenar copying is just too good, make it a minus. Maerna I would just play for 9 life a turn, maybe reduce it to 5 or 6. Tarragor's ult can be achieved within three turns of playing him, and hello Emrakul, so definitely make that more costly. Volar's ult is also an auto-win, can be achieved within three turns, and he destroys creatures, so I would combine his first two into a minus, and make his ult more expensive. But nice ideas!

I honestly shouldn't have to. Take a look at the card. Read its abilities. None of them could possibly be considered reasonable by any stretch of the imagination.

First of all you would say "planeswalker spells you control cost less to cast."

Anyway let's look at each card.

  1. This is extremely powerful in any format where Jace, the Mindsculptor is legal. This into Mystic Gate is a turn two Jace, which is nearly unbeatable. It should enter tapped. I would base it off of Eye of Ugin and make it unable to tap for mana.

  2. He seems powerful but not busted. However the second ability is not a mechanic that WOTC uses anymore. Also the last ability should say, "until the end of turn you may play instants and sorceries from your hand without paying their mana cost."

  3. Busted. Really really powerful. The +1 is already insanely good and the 0 ability is nearly unbeatable for any burn/RDW deck. She should cost at least 4 mana and cost actual colored mana instead of split costs.

  4. Seems powerful and to be fair should probably cost a little more.

  5. Fair, not a huge powerhouse but still strong.

  6. You realize that the second ability says "as long as you + your planeswalker it cannot die"? It should only prevent damage from one source.

  7. Seems a little strong. Should either cost more or have a +1 and a -4 instead.

  8. Seems good but powerful. Probably should be at least -12 if not -14.

  9. Seems fine. Could be a little overcosted on the payment. Costing 5 or even 4 would still be fair.

  10. Seems rather weak. You can up the power level a lot on this one. Remember that it does cost WUBRG.

What should I change it to, then?

I have already heard that the "gain 9 life" should be changed to 5 or 6, so what should the others be changed to to make it a balanced card?

filledelanuit says... #11

So I missed the second card. Shift my answer down one after #1.

Anyway for #2: The + is insanely busted in EDH. It definately shouldn't be a + ability. The - is a fair.

She has a positive Arc Lightning-type ability, she can gain 9 life per turn (that should be lowered probably to 5 or 6, as I said in the comment above) and her ultimate is a one-sided boardwipe plus a ton of damage in the face. For three mana.

Red white one is to good. Turn 2 bolt a turn is really powerful. Dividable bolt is even better.

filledelanuit says... #14

Her ultimate is totally fair. Her 0 should be a -1 and 6 ish life. Her +1 is really powerful. It should be to either just one target or only 2 damage. 3 damage is amazingly powerful.

March 1, 2015 9:22 p.m.

Forget her, has anyone seen Tarragor? I mean, he can get Emrakul within 3 turns of being played!!

March 1, 2015 9:25 p.m.

klone13 says... #16

yeah but he costs 5 mana and turn 8 emrakul isn't too op considering Polymorph and other stuff.

March 1, 2015 9:27 p.m.

He can be got out by T3 considering all the mana dorks and boosters in MTG. And with the reflection card, he can do it earlier. AND he fetches mana dorks. This guy is broke.

March 1, 2015 9:30 p.m.

klone13 says... #18

well you can get emrakul t3 in a polymorph deck. I honestly think it is fair.

Ok, I can now see that I have some changes to make.

  • The first land can't result in a T2 JtMS lordoftheshadows because Mystic Gate requires already having a blue source in play. It might become broken in tron, where getting a T3 Ugin or Karn will become much more common.

  • Ebenar is just completely out of whack, I will probably end up trashing him, I was just trying to find a new idea for a colorless walker.

  • Khan's ult should be reworded.

  • The Maerna card is OP, I'll revert her to the casting cost I had before () and change her 0 to gain 5 life.

  • The tutor and Nemezal seem OK, I'll leave them as they are.

  • I would like to hear some more input on the second land, as I am unsure if it is really that OP.

  • Volar and Tarragor need to have their costs increased.

  • World's Reflection will be changed to pay 4 at next upkeep.

  • Zaanalkar will have his first ability changed to something more suiting of a drop walker.

March 1, 2015 9:32 p.m.

Maybe make Zaanalkar just a five color walker WITHOUT the extra two? He's not really OP, and five colors is already very hard to achieve.

March 1, 2015 9:36 p.m.

And klone13, you call a T3 Emrakul fair?

March 1, 2015 9:37 p.m.

klone13 says... #22

not that fair but still, i think the green walker is perfectly fine.

March 1, 2015 9:38 p.m.

xlaleclx says... #23

It's not unfair. Polymorph isn't very good

March 1, 2015 9:40 p.m.

Kryzis says... #24

klone13 and FAMOUSWATERMELON I am changing Tarragor's +2 to +1. That will make it a T6 Emrakul, the Aeons Torn, which is already achievable with other combo decks.

March 1, 2015 9:41 p.m.

filledelanuit says... #25

It isn't broken as is. If your game plan is based around landing a 5 drop planeswalker and having stick around for 3 turns without taking damage at all I'm not worried in the slightest. It requires you dedicate a sideboard slot to it; resolve it; and protect it compeltely. That isn't competitive in any format in which Emmy is legal in. Modern would kill you before you did anything. Legacy straight up wouldn't care, and vintage would laugh you out of the room.

March 1, 2015 9:48 p.m.

Haha I love how you personify the formats.

I have made changes to these cards, what do people think?

Cool stuff.

March 1, 2015 11:08 p.m.

I'd prefer seeing Maerna:
1WR
+1: Healing Salve
-1: Forked Bolt
-7: [Her Ult]
(4)

Repeatable damage, especially as an Arc Lightning effect, is extremely powerful. It's dangerous to put it as a + because it can literally lock someone out of the game. Also lowered to 2 damage for power reasons.

Gaining life, on the other hand, doesn't impact the board. It can be a + ability all day.

Her ult doesn't feel WR to me, but I don't have any great suggestions there.
