Whenever an Instant or sorcery deals damage to an opponent or an opponent controlled permanent, it deals that much damage to you.

Yeah I also think that the downside clause is unnecessary. Giving your spells deathtouch is cool, but not broken.

I think it's a fair drawback for a pretty powerful ability. If you were using him as a commander you would only include spells that deal a very small amount of damage, like Shock for example (imagine taking down a giant creature for only R and taking 2 damage). I would leave him as is except maybe give him flying since he's a spirit.
Wording on the last ability should probably be:
Whenever an instant or sorcery deals damage to anything, it deals that much damage to you.
Or something like that...

I think it's a pretty busted card. I say this not (purely) for power level reasons but for color pie reasons. This ability actually reads "burn spells kill anything and deal damage to you instead". Easily 90%+ of the cards this affects are mono red, the color that should have some trouble dealing with big threats. Black wishes it had a spell that was pay two life, destroy target creature.
Also the drawback should likely be restricted to spells you control dealing damage to yourself otherwise your opponent will murder you with Anger of the Gods and a board presence.

Yeah it needs the "you control" part because imagine if someones running Blasphemous Act. Also, maybe change the second part about whenever it deals damage to a permanent to something like "whenever an instant or sorcery spell deals damage to a creature an opponent controls, you lose 1 life" because otherwise you lose way too much life too quickly.

Geez, no one plays D&D anymore huh? This is classic hellfire warlock. Insane amount of power at the cost of your soul. In D&D it amplifies damage while draining your constitution. So it makes perfect sense to me. I'd go as far to say flavorfully it should give you poison counters, but that would be too much.
Definitely change the wording on the last ability to:
Whenever an instant or sorcery you control deals damage to an opponent or a permanent an opponent controls, Nico, Hellfire Warlock deals that much damage to you.

I actually like this a lot; it could be pretty fun, although I feel like it should be rather than . It would sorta follow the sometimes unstable nature of Izzet's magic, but y'know, that's just me.
I also agree with the text change, especially making it instants and sorceries you control.
