How does this sound?

Indoctrination
Sorcery
Target player reveals his or her hand. You choose a nonland card from it. That player discards that card.

It's basically another copy of Thoughtseize, I realize, but it can also be a "free" copy.

It seems a little too good. This would see play over Thoughtseize in every deck that could play it, plus decks that aren't black could play it then. The splashability is what kills it, it would go on the banned list right next to Mental Misstep

I think I'd like it better as instead. Just being free, even at 4 life, seems a bit busted.

Ah, yeah, I hadn't even thought of the comparison to Mental Misstep. It was an idea I've had floating around in my head for a while.

It would be alright for , but then it wouldn't be quite as competitive.

To be honest i think it's fair at two mana. Paying 4 life in a non black to discard 1 card isn't exactly getting you ahead unless you're preventing something pretty big from happening whereas mistep always hits something good no matter what for 2 less life

I think it's fair and extremely strong but not broken. 4 life is enough that you don't just wanna be ripping these off as much as you can; doing it for "free" twice is a huge defecit. I like the adaptibility with being able to pay BB later in the game, too.

I think it's better than Thoughtseize, naturally, but not busted. Played a ton? Yes. But not banworthy.

Maybe add a clause like exiling it afterwards just to make it a little worse?

It seems very strong but not broken enough to go on the banned list. If it was printed it would be definitely at rare level.

Maybe so. There are pretty good points to both sides. I realize it's not broken, seeing that it is a fifth of your starting life total to play for free. But being able to use this in 8rack would push that deck a little bit higher. Using this after an Inquisition of Kozilek on the first turn to make sure they won't have something turn one seems pretty good, but it just means that against aggro and burn you are even closer to losing.

That card is strictly better than Thoughtseize. While it might not be busted it very easily could be utterly insane. It should probably be toned down some.

Well, not strictly... They could have a Chalice of the Void set to 2 :p

Or just Spell Snare lol

@Jay It is strictly better, you are just resaying the "dies to Doom Blade" argument. Just as a card in a void, it is a better Thoughtseize since it can be cast for free, same as a normal one with damage, or just for . That plus the fact it can be splashed anywhere makes it very useful
