Custom Cards forum

My friends and I were discussing card design the other day, and this pitch came up. I argued that this was hardly broken, though far less restrictive than most of the mono-white card draw we've gotten recently. Others thought this was far too strong. Thoughts?

Legendary Creature- X Bard

Whenever a creature you control with base power 2 or less attacks, if it has 3 or more power, draw a card.

: Target creature gets +1/+1 and your choice of First Strike, Lifelink, or Vigilance until end of turn.

3/4

Some thoughts on balancing: could reduce the required initial power to 1. Does the wording of the initial (card draw) ability sound appropriate? Any other ideas if it needs it?

This would push white weenie into overdrive. Honor of the Pure, Rally the Ranks, and a pile of Elite Vanguards and Expedition Envoys will turn into a value machine, and +1/+1 counters are easy to come by. Even dropping it down to base power 1 might not be enough.

My first thought is that if you want it to allow multiple draws per turn, make it a quantity limit, something like "Whenever you attack with six or more creatures, draw a card for each attacking creature beyond the fifth." I'm guessing at the numbers, so that might be too restrictive.

This card has potential, but I think it's giving a little too much free value to white, playing too much to its strengths.

I think if you simply add the parameters of "nontoken" then it'll be fine. Otherwise, with the plethora of 2/2 knight and 2/2 soldier tokens, this could be one of the single most powerful value engines in the format.

Though, perhaps white deserves it. And it is on a creature, so it is easily removable.

The concept behind the card is 'anthem tribal' and wants to 'inspire others' to be better (you know, that good bard flavor). It would feel odd to leave out the 'nameless masses' (tokens) or limit it if there's not enough or too many. The only thing I can see is a limit to the number of cards you draw this way per turn, but perhaps limit it to three or some number greater than one (an equivalent to one per turn, since you're not attacking on your opponent's turns).

The thing I struggle with is if you just add blue to your weenie deck, you get this effect in duplicate depending on if you ETB, attack trigger, deal damage, etc, and usually with flyers to boot.

There's the alternate wording to 'if a creature has at least +1/+1' (or even amp it up to +2/+2) or something like that. I feel that leaves out Battlecry-esque mechnaics a la Signal Pest, and I want to fit that as well. Perhaps do I require an enchantment in play to trigger?

Blue is the best color for repeated drawing. White is the weakest. If you add the color that's best at something to a deck, the deck's going to do that thing better, especially if the base color comes up short in that area.

I'm not trying to trivialize your point about drawing, and I think I understand your intent. But making a white card that can potentially Concentrate every time you attack is going to be a hard sell. If you cap it at two cards per attack step, that might work. It could even give you a little room to play with extra attacks.
