Rakdos spell recursion?
Custom Cards forum

I'm currently thinking about a card similar to Shreds of Sanity, but without the exile on resolve-thing. As this card would basically be an endless value engine once you assemble two or even more, i think it should at leased be mythic rare and two-coloured. As i don't wantit to be a op-izzet card and the original seems pretty insane, rakdos shall be it. What do you think?
Recurring insanity 2RB
Sorcery
Return up to one target instant card and up to one target sorcery card from yor graveyard to your hand. You loose 2 life for each card returned this way.

Nice one. Actually seems a lot better. I even prefer the name. Heads up!
I'm not sold on the 'discard at random' though, but i see it is a very rakdos thing to do. Do you have more ideas for a pseudo drawback on this?

Well the discard at random is the alternative to exile really. Taken from cards like Gamble.
For other draw backs you need something to poteintally break chains.

New idea:
Recursive cackling
Sorcery
Return up to three instant and/or sorcery cards from your graveyard to your hand, then discard a card at random. If an instant or sorcery card is discarded this way, each player loses 2 life.
I took the new name and the discard part, but made the life loss hit every player. The new cost makes this playable in mono red or black as well while keeping the insanity flavour of rakdos. Thoughts?

Boiling Trouble 3RB
Enchantment - R
At the begining of your upkeep, put a Trouble counter on ~ then return instant or sorceries up to the number of counters from your graveyard, to your hand.
At the end of turn lose life equal to the number of counters on ~ minus the number of instants and sorceries in your graveyard.
So you can keep getting more and more back, but if you cant keep filling up your graveyard you will start to take a lot of damage.
seshiro_of_the_orochi I think the lifeloss part makes it firmly black and red. Not black or red. If it was just a regrowth x2 and gamble it could be pure red. Or had the lifeloss maybe black.

I get your point. I'm not too fond with the enchantment version. The point of the card was to feel like a rakdos version of Seasons Past, so the possbility of chaining is part of the idea. Changing the cost back to 2RB indeed seems correct. The other possibility seems to be 1RRB.

Does it have to be rakdos? The only reason izzet would get that effect is because it has blue (see Archeomancer), so I think this type of effect could be Azorius, Dimir, or Simic, especially if it can also recur Artifact/Enchantments, Artifacts/Creatures, or Enchantments/Creatures, respectively.
"Choose two:
Return target instant...
Return target sorcery...
Return target artifact...
Return target creature card..."
Recurring instants and sorceries is basically as blue as a mechanic can get.

These are all some good ideas, but I want to get to the heart of the Rakdos spirit - self-sacrifice in any way, shape or form. What do you think of...

Night's Machinations - BR
Instant
If Night's Machinations would be put into a graveyard from anywhere, exile it instead.
Return target instant or sorcery card from your graveyard to your hand. Each player loses 2 life.
You may cast Night's Machinations from exile by paying 2 life or sacrificing a creature in addition to its other costs.

I think it's interesting and powerful enough to be mythic-worthy but not too abusable to be completely broken (correct me if I'm wrong). I've considered possibly rewording an additional cost of "2 life or sacrifice a creature" as well as making it a cost-less spell like the pacts, forcing a cast through a madness ability, but the end result kept being too complex to explain or cast. I think a Madness or Hellbent ability might be cool but this is the best I can come up with right now. What do you think?

Maybe something like
Vicious Cycle 2BR
ScorceryReturn up to one target instant and up to one target scorcery from your graveyard to your hand.
Hellbent - at the begining of your end step, if you have no cards in hand, return Vicious Cycle to your hand and it deals 3 damage to you.

dusterGGG: i don't like the hellbent ability too much. It's interesting, but i prefer CynicalDogs suggestion.
I'm still searching for a way to have it recurr another copy of itself from time to time, but for now, exiling seems fine. How about this:
Recursive cackling 1RB
Sorcery
Return up to three instant and or sorcery cards from your graveyard to your hand, then exile ~.
Hellbent - you may cast ~ from exile by paying two life in addition to its other costs as long as you have no cards in hand.

That last one actually looks pretty good, I like the idea of limiting the cast from exile with Hellbent. However, I think the first cast for returning 3 cards without the Hellbent limit may be a little too powerful. How about:
"Return up to 2 target instant or sorcery cards from your graveyard to your hand. If ~ was cast from exile, you may return another target instant or sorcery card from your graveyard to your hand."
I can't immediately see any problems with it other than that, as it currently requires infinite mana to create any other loops. It doesn't break Flashback or Rebound, and it's a nice reward for satisfying the Hellbent ability while not completely breaking a game on its own,
As for ~ recurring a itself or a copy, I think the exile clause actually removes that from being a problem. It's immune to "exile from graveyard" abilities for obvious reasons, and if for some reason it would be put into a graveyard (through discard, Eldrazi Processors, or weird stuff), there are other spells/abilities (such as Archaeomancer, Mystic Retrieval, and the Delve mechanic) that put it back into action.

That isnt mythic rare quality. It is barely pushing rare.
Here is my take on it to push the RB angle and push it to rare.
Recursive Cackling 2RB
Sorcery - R
Return up to three instant or sorceries from your graveyard to your hand, then discard a card at random. If an instant or sorcery was discarded this way, each opponent loses 2 life.
