Yeah free tutor at any life cost is pretty OP

An instant speed tutor that you have to pay 7 life for? That's really too good.

Dylan says... #6

even if it was a sorcery, it would be overpowered as f***

February 12, 2015 12:34 p.m.

klone13 says... #7

It would be banned in every format except restricted in vintage. Should I change to 10 life.

Dylan says... #8

Even at 10 life it would still be overpowered

February 12, 2015 12:36 p.m.

squire1 says... #9

yeah vintage and EDH would play this if it said 19 life.

*?

How about if you pay X life and grab a card with CMC X or less and reveal it? At sorcery speed, of course. Maybe still have it cost a single black at that point, though.

I mean all this says in vintage is

"You start with a life total of X. You may have two copies of black lotus in your deck. Have fun comboing off turn one. Or if you have the combo already, go get FOW to stop the guy trying to combo block you. "

It is by definition a card that would warp any format around it requiring deck to build answers for it or play it. That is bannable,.

klone13 - Vampiric Tutor is restricted in Vintage and it's an insane card, AND it puts the card on top instead of in the hand. Having the card be "free" with only a life payment is an easy way to make a busted card. The only way this card could even get remotely printable was if it said:

Instant

Sadistic tutor is black

As an additional cost to cast Sadistic Tutor, pay 19 life.

You lose the game at the end of your next turn.

And even then it's probably too good.

The only way that a free tutor would be not-bannable would to have it say:

Search your library for any card and put it into your hand. For the rest of the game, you cannot play spells with the same name as the card chosen with this ability.

Any amount of life that isn't your entire life total is too few. Tutoring in Magic is too good.

even that would be too good. There are far too many ways to cheat things into play, and it doesnt restrict getting lands (because they are not spells), a free tutor is always going to be too good.

Cost:

Instant

"Name a creature. Search your library for a creature card with the same name as that creature, and put it in your hand. Until the end of turn, creatures with the same name as that creature cost less to cast. Creatures with the same name as that creature gain 'cumulative upkeep ' when they enter play."

Hue hue hue hue

But then you've got a tutor that doubles as a removal spell.

If you cast that and name elvish mystic (random example, by go with it), search your library, and fail to find (presumably because you aren't playing any), now all of your opponents mystics cost 6 and kill themselves, effectively removing them from the game.

slovakattack says... #19

PlattBonnay: True. It needs "Creatures YOU CONTROL with the same name..."

You should lose the game on the end step. Forces it to be used in combo decks

Custom cards are always OP. This one is no exception. This card would be banned in Vintage.

Klone, 0 cost cards are tough to not make OP. Tutor custom cards are as well.

When you go to make a custom card, take cards that are similar, and see what happened with them. Instant speed is also a huge deal. Difference between instant and sorcery on many cards is 1 in the cmc. At least on many of the sorceries, that I can think of with instant counterparts.
