This card retains state information as it changes zones - this is not something that does anything. is it supposed to be a Skullbriar, the Walking Grave ?

Boza yes, that's generally the idea. I didn't know that card existed so it looks like they're already toying with the mechanic somewhat.

This also applies to cards in hand/library though. There was another one that got a +1/+1 every time you searched your library and revealed it there. That way if and when you actually drew the thing it was a beast

Then, it cannot work as intended - library and hand are hidden information zones and you cannot guarantee that this card will work in hidden zones.

Say for example, you have 2 of these zombies in hand. How do you know which one has 3 counters, and which one - 5? Or how many counters does each copy in your library has?

TLDR - Use Skullbriar to template this properly.

Additionally, Memory as is means absolutely nothing useful - it means the card remembers if it was tapped, untapped, unmorphed, etc. as it moves between zones.

Two things: I agree with you that the wording of the ability needs to be adjusted in order to work as intended.

It could work, but only in an alternate art situation like they did with Fallen Empires and print multiple art versions of the same card. Or rules could stipulate some kind of differentiating feature on each unique copy.

Back when we tested this ability, though, it wasn't as powerful as it appears. The creature that reveals when tutoring, for example, got huge but that's meaningless when you never draw the thing
