Story Idea

Hey all, I wanted to see what you guys thought of a current story series idea I had. It would be in serials and take place over 33 stories (set into about 8 episodes grouped together as seasons), and is set in the MTG multiverse (although not a fully recognizable one). I'd like some extra ideas, commentary on character/story/worldbuilding ideas I have now and anything else if possible (PS I will design cards around each if I can):

100 years after the War of the Spark, knowledge of the Multiverse and the existence of planes is semi-well known, with an Interplanar Alliance now acting as a unit of peace keeping. At the center of this alliance is Ravnica. Since the existence of this alliance, interplanar travel has grown and while planeswalkers still exist (in fact, they often become well known celebrities in the world). Certain planes have changed into tools of the IA, including the Meditation Plane (which has become a prison plane) or Muraganda (which has become a training plane for IA troops).

While this has occurred, Chancellor of the IA Niv-Mizzet declares the first IA approved Planar Ship, the Sky Ship Karn. This ships purpose is to resolve conflicts, investigate multiplanar criminals and perform vital research on the multiverse as a whole. However, there seems to be a mission that the IA itself doesn't fully know about, involving the obsession of the ships captain towards a order of planeswalkers that have been missing for 80 years known as the Gatewatch.

Home Plane - Dominaria

Species - Human

A captain representing the interplanar alliance, she flies the skyship Karn with great skill on missions including scientific missions, peace missions and reconnaissance. However, an obsession with an ancient order of planeswalkers leads to many questions, including what is her connection to this group?

Homeplane - Mercadia

Species - Human

Although employed as the cook of the Karn, Kyven appears to be much more worldly and dangerous than your average chef. His shady past, including once being a prisoner of the alliance, leads many to distrust him, but his skills are invaluable. During his years on Mercadia, he was trained in the ways of mercenaries and now acts as a vital part of the Karn. He appears to be know the true mission. His claim to fame is ending up in the Meditation Realm and being the only prisoner to escape it, after being falsely accused of assassinating the first interplanar alliance chancellor. He has a long history with the Captain, since she was both the one to capture him and prove his innocence, the actions of which lead to the building of the Karn.

Homeplane - Shandalar

Species - Human

Born on the plane Shandalar, Surmak was a genius archaeologist studying the artifacts of the ancient Onakke ogres when he met Captain Sarita. As an artificer, he is able to utilize a number of machines and has invented several items the crew uses in their everyday life.

Homeplane - Cridhe

Species - Elf

Hailing from the now ocean world of Cridhe, Sylvan searches the planes for a way to resurrect the island of Cridhe from the bottom of the sea floor. He met up with the Karn during a rescue mission to the plane. He’s a skilled arbor mage and magical historian.

Homeplane - Wildfire

Species - Djinn

When the emberfire caliphate killed her lover and branded Princess Qhati a traitor and heretic, it was the Karn which rescued her. Rather than return to the plane, she instead chose to continue travelling with the Karn. Being the chief scientific officer and Captain Sarita's lover/soon to be wife (YES THERE IS A ROMANCE PLOT), she is more privy to the true mission of the Karn than the others are.

Homeplane - Regatha

Species - Nightmare Beast

It once hunted the halls of the now abandoned Keral Keep, after the monastic order that occupied it was finally laid under siege by the Order of Heliud. However, after being rescued by Captain Sarita and the other members of the Planarship Karn, it soon became a valuable guard and ally upon the ship. Although not fully sentient, Kerry, as it’s often called, appears to have more intelligence and ability even compared to other Nightmares. It even appears to care for the members of the crew (although it seems to mostly like pissing off Salson by chewing on his slippers).

Homeplane - Kaldheim

Species - Human

Although Kaldheim is a plane which is not part of the planar alliance or is readily knowledgeable of the existence of other planes, Salson is one of the few ambassadors to the interplanar alliance from the frosty plane. He also uses his tenure on the Karn to search for his sister, who he believes to have been a planeswalker after she disappeared during an attack. His axe is one of the most powerful axes in the planes, able to cut the very fiber of a plane down.

Homeplane - Kamigawa

Species - Snake (Orochi)

Although the snake people of Kamigawa rarely become ninjas, Oritake proved to be one of the best her people could offer. However, it soon appeared that Oritake was rejected both by the ninja clans and the Orochi, resulting in her becoming a traveling nomad. Her main place now is traveling the planes with the karn as one of their key medical officers, since poison and medicine are only so far apart.

Homeplane - Valla

Species - Orc

Hailing from the constantly storming and warring plane of Valla, Grelden escaped the constant war only to find that the multiverse itself is a place of conflict. Even now, he sees himself as the primary peacekeeper of the Karn and often attempts to bring the peace he found himself to others, whether through speech or through a blade.

Homeplane - Vryn

Species - Human(?)

Cursed with pale green skin and a number of abilities he can’t explain, Galen was saved by the Karn when they discovered him being hunted by the former planeswalker Scant. He was taken on as the new member of the Karn, but the reason for that may have more to do with the secrets of the Karn. While he appears to be able to read minds and sometimes turn people to stone, he appears to have other abilities that come and go as they travel, although it’s unclear of where these abilities come from and who he actually is, as he seems to have almost no memories or family other than the single woman who raised him on Vryn, who subsequently disappeared shortly before Scant started hunting him.

I'll admit, this is where I have the least ideas. To be honest, I already have my idea for the first story to take place on Vryn and involve how Galen is introduced to the Karn and his subsequent joining from the group (and the introduction of Scant as a regularly recurring villain who's hunting Galen due to his Beleren ancestry.) I also know I want to do at least one story addressing each of the characters back story on their home plane, a two part arc on Ravnica and a two part arc heading between Tarkir and Alara, then a final three part arc closing out the series focusing on what actually happened to the gatewatch in the end. Additionally, I want to make this story longer and include a few more episodes focused on the team as a whole, maybe enough to make an additional season or revisiting planes, different themes, etc.

Story planes I plan on visiting and proposed story order:

  1. Vryn (All ten focused)

  2. Eldraine (Galen focused story off homeplane)

  3. Ixalon (Qhatti focused story off homeplane)

  4. Amonkhet (Sylvan focused off homeplane)

  5. Zendikar (Salson Focused off homeplane)

  6. Ikoria (Kerry Focused off homeplane)

  7. Kylem (Oritake focused off homeplane)

  8. Lorwyn (Sarita focused off homeplane)

  9. Kaladesh (Surmak focused off homeplane)

10+11. Alara/Tarkir two part (All ten focused)

  1. The Blind Eternities (All ten focused)

  2. Fiora (Grelden focused off homeplane)

  3. Theros (Kyven focused off homeplane, explains the origin of the Karn)

  4. Mercadia (Kyven on homeplane)

  5. Kamigawa (Oritake on homeplane)

  6. Valla (Grelden on homeplane)

  7. Vryn (Galen on homeplane)

  8. Kaldheim (Salson on homeplane)

20+21. Ravnica (All ten focused, two parter)

  1. Muraganda (All ten focused)

  2. Wildfire (Qhatti on homeplane)

  3. Dominaria (Sarita on homeplane)

  4. Shandalar (Surmak on homeplane)

  5. Cridhe (Sylvan on homeplane)

  6. Regatha (Kerry on homeplane)

  7. New Phyrexia/Mirrodin (No focus, but getting close to the end)

29+30+31. The finale, taking place set between Dominaria, Vryn and an unknown plane

Note: I plan on doing this over the course of literal years, and as I finish them I might release them somewhere. This is just a starting off point as I start working on the first short story this summer, called Vrynian Nights.
