I don't know where else to put this, but i figured the basic info would fit best in Custom Cards forum. Feel free to ask questions! I created this format idea only 3 weeks ago, so it's really new (plus theres the fact that i don't really have a playgroup at the moment so i haven't played it before) but sharing it with others seems like the way to get success with the format.

The image that had all the details seems to have wigged out, so i'll post the info here-

100 card format, with one commander and one noncreature, nonplaneswalker artifact or enchantment as a relic, in the Contention Zone. Any player may take control of the relic by paying mana equal to the relics mana cost. If an opponent currently has control of the relic, that player draws cards equal to half the relic’s converted mana cost. If the relic would leave the battlefield, instead put the relic in the Contention Zone. No banlists as of yet!

Just curious, has this format been played/tested? I'd be interested to know!

You might want to make your ban list the edh ban list just as a baseline

Baseline edh banlist sounds good, and i have not playtested the format, its still in construction to see if anyone else notices flaws in the format as it stands!

This sounds exactly like commander, but with extra steps. Pro tip - do not make commander variants that are literally two rules away from actual commander.

In actuality what will happen is - the relics in contention will be either hot garbage or actually awesome. People will vie for the awesome ones, and the other will sit in perpetuity in the zone. It creates tension where it is not needed at all and distracts player from the actual game to play a mini-game.

Honestly, I have no idea what this adds to commander, but Commander adventures, a free print and play on this very site, is like an upgrade to this idea.
