Hello all,
Me and a few others are participating in a card designing thread, where one person does one part of the card, until all the elements of the card are there. Recently, we've created a lot of cards, and now we're creating images of them on mtgcardsmith.com. We're actually thinking of creating a custom set. Wanna help?

Then, I will pick up to 200 to include in the set. Let's make some good cards everyone!

I should also mention that we're bringing Contraptions & Riggers back. Go wild, people!

Anyways, I feel like we should include the thread here just so you guys get an idea. Are we doing it in the same format (each person does one part)? That felt easy and fun. Also, are we doing cards for users?

Why don't we let the storyline sorta make itself?
For example: Every good story has a protagonist and an antagonist. Let's make legends that represent each side. Also, we need some ideas for the plane. I'd personally love to create the ideas behind the setting and the plane.
Also, 6tennis, most of the cards people will suggest will be mythic or rare quality. It would help if you, say, put openings in a comment saying you need like, 16 blue commons. Then people commenting after you will make those cards. You save the comments somehow, then say the next set of cards: 12 blue uncommon. Stuff like that will help this blossom.

I was thinking more of doing a T/O set. The plane could be the plane of Tapped Out. We could make a card for the top 200 or so users (not all creatures), and a planeswalker card for Epoch, Yeago, and Chief.

All good ideas. I'll start here.
We need 19 white commons.
As for plane, we probably shouldn't do vanilla planes like Zendikar and Mirrodin. I'd take a look at Planechase, and see what planes you like. (I believe that Planechase cards represent all the planes in the Blind Eternities.) When it comes to story, as we get more cards, we can start adding lore that threads them all together.
For the format, it won't be like the main thread. One person will make one card. If we do it the other way, this thread will get waaaay too long.
I think we should wait 'till we have cards at common and uncommon before we start venturing into the realm of legends, specifically player cards. We'll see if we can support them in this set.

So no T/O Plane? :(
I'm not against another plane, but as far as I've been here, we've had 4 or 5 custom sets begin, and none of them got very far, mostly because it's extremely hard to develop characteristics for each creature. T/O would make it easy because all the users would have to do would give their favorite colors, effects, and OFF WE GO!!!! We don't have to make this serious at all, just a mix of cards. Hell, there could be more rares than commons :)

Please don't use cardsmith. Its freaking disgusting. Download Magic Set Editor and the cards will actually look like Magic cards. Upload em to imgur and you're good to go.
As far as making commons and uncommons, we need mechanics before we can design. Draft archetypes, themes among colors, tribal (if any), and new mechanics are all important, even when it comes to making commons. Usually, to make it flavorful, the story needs to be imagined first.

Agreed. And also, I think we should make something clear to everyone: THIS IS NOT A JOKE SET, like Unglued. There can be humor, only in the flavor and general idea of the card. All the cards are meant to make sense and be playable. And suggested art should not be a photo. At least, that's what I think it should be.

is actually a good idea. I do like the sound of a T/O-themed set. So, we have an agenda:
Devise a storyline.
Devise some mechanics and stuff. For this one, what's to say we can't make our own mechanics?

I have a couple ideas for storyline/theme. First is haitian voodoo. The sultai touched on that a bit but not quite. Another idea is kind of similar to zendikar it's like some prehistoric landscape with dinosaurish things. These would be made up planes but for real planes we could use: Shandalar, Muraganda, Fabacin seems cool. This is a great idea.

Well how about we also start asking people to start making the cards? That way, we can make up new mechanics as we need them. Here's what I think we should do:
A) List the top 200 or so users (Top 100 here)
B) Ask each of them for permission to make a card around them
C) If they say yes, ask for a preferred image, colors, style, etc...
D) MAKE THE CARD!

Ok guys, so I' ve planning on writing a book for a while now, but it's not really coming along.(It's fantasy) I spent a lot of time world-building and I'm rather proud of it. Now that the book is getting scrapped, I'd love to show you guys the world I'vecome up with. It'd be much easier to make a story when you got a vivid setting. I am currently on a phone, and don't have all my notes with me. I'll get home in a couple hours, and show you guys what I got. Hopefully this will help.

FAMOUSWATERMELON Yeah, good idea. Speaking of, who will be the antagonist? Actually, since the antagonist in Zendikar was literally the weather, I think we can ask "what" is the antagonist.
PutridLeech Ooh, schweet! But 3 things: 1, Eradicate is already a card. 2, this mechanic is EXTREMELY confusing if it's not worded properly.
Recurrence (Whenever a permanent you control with recurrence is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, put it onto the battlefield under target opponent's control.)
3, the way Recurrence is designed now, I'm not sure it'll work. I think that instead of the permanent having a drawback that hurts you, make the permanent have a schweet ability that is really good, but you also run the risk of your opponent having it.

So, we need to decide on a setting and a plot. When Gecko shows us his notes, we should be able to come up with a setting. The problem is plot. We have two options:
The protagonist wants to do something, but the antagonist wants to stop them.
The antagonist wants to do something, but the protagonist wants to stop them.
Now all we gotta do is figure out the somethings.

zephramtripp We probably shouldn't have modern technology in the set. I don't know about you, but one of my favorite things about Magic is the wonderful range of fantasy in each block. It's all fantasy, but still manages to be fascinating without an inkling of modern technology. Idea makes sense though.

Guys- I forgot to mention this, but my "book" already has a vague plot. I'm gonna be home and will start writing the setting thingamajig in maybe 15 mins. Expect it in around an hour.

I'd like to propose that the plane where it takes place is some sort of hub for planeswalkers and great mages to share their magic (that's like T/O), so we can have a ton of legendaries and walkers in the set and keep it tappedout themed. Iunno, that's just my 2 Zimbabwean dollars.

Okay, here goes. Keep in mind that was supposed to be a fantasy novel, so will probably not fit for a Magic set. But that is what the community is here for.
I call the plane Mythaven.
So long, long, ago, mythical creatures and beings like elves and centaurs and dwarves all lived on Earth in harmony with humans. Eventually, humans started to get tired of the mythical creatures (they thought that the beings were creatures of the devil: think burning "witches" at the stake) and the humans began a war to kill all the unnatural creatures and wizards and everyone else who was magical. Obviously, mythical creatures don't multiply in population like us humans: they reproduce slowly. So, while magical creatures (I'm gonna call them mythics for short) were much more powerful than humans, the sheer size of the human armies were overwhelming. So the mythics understood that they needed another place to live. So at a key moment, when the mythics were all trapped inside a small area of land, a few important mages/wizards gathered and decided to save all the mythics. So, using their magic, the mages lifted the land into the air, above the atmosphere, and wiped the memories of all the humans of Earth so they wouldn't remember the mythics again.
So the setting of my story is that floating island, which I call Mythaven. There are many races on the Mythaven, but here are the main ones: Humans, Menfolk, Shingles, Druids, Dwarves, Tors, and Demons. Each of the races and their habitat will be explained in detail below.
Mythaven is divided into 9 regions (8 official ones). They are Ashfield, the Forests of Say'kala, the Tor Deserts, Shingle, the Jungles of Kalran, Vorzglan, Merinthon, Silve, and Polarin. Each of the aforementioned races has a home in one of these regions.
Ashfield: Ashfield is the home of humans. Though most humans were against the mythics, some humans were not and chose to leave Earth behind to start a new life at Mythaven. Ashfield is the home of dukes, kings, wizards, knights, etc. Its main city is Ashfield (yes, the same name for the region and the country) and it is a picturesque city with castles, high towers, palaces, and great academies of wizardry and the arts. Though Ashfield is primarily a human city, all races from all regions are welcome here. As such, it is a thriving center of trade. Anything, as long as you have the money, can be bought in Ashfield.
The Forests of Say'kala: On the west border of Ashfield are the famed Forests of Say'kala, the home of the elusive druids and a flourishing center of nature. Say'kala's borders are fully enclosed within a huge marble wall, which was built during the druids' war with the Tors. Since the war, the druids have denied access into Say'kala to all who are not its residents. Though it may not look like it, the wall is heavily guarded. All who try to sneak into the forests are brutally executed. Say'kala only has two druid cities, Hentshadow and Aelfort, which are known as the two best protected cities in Mythaven. The druids' highly reclusive and suspicious nature means that connections with other regions are uncertain and tensions high.

The Tor Deserts: The Tor Deserts are located directly north of Say'kala. The Tors, their inhabitants, are an aggressive, nomadic, race. Similar to the druids, they are reclusive and rarely seen out in Ashfield. The Tor deserts are endless, dangerous, and scorching. The average human wouldn't survive there for a day. However, Tors don't live in the actual deserts: they live in enormous cities built around oases. The cities are very well hidden by illusion magic and are impossible to find without the guidance of a Tor. Inside the cities, you will find huge trees (I'm talking twice as high as a California Redwood) that Tors build their homes in. Each of the trees grows over the body of a families' ancestor. Entire families are found having homes on one tree.
Shingle: Shingle is the small country located south of Polarin and east of Silve. Shingle is pretty much steampunk land: everything there is mechanized. Imagine this: a brightly painted green copper tree in a public park with some steel birds flitting around and chattering, trying to pick up a steel worm off of the ground. The Shingles themselves are extremely intelligent creatures: they aren't really robots: they're more like living cores in metallic body. This core can be taken out and put into another body, say an eagle. If a Shingle's core were to be put into a specially built mechanic eagle that could hold a core, they would lose control of their old body and become the eagle instead. The process of making Shingle cores is a tightly kept secret that a council of human wizards regulates. The Shingles are a peaceful race, but during a war, they are a country you want on your side. They are very well known for their espionage devices (think of that eagle spying) and complex siege devices. It is worth noting that the technology of Shingle around the level of 1800's stuff, as opposed to the medieval tech of other regions.
The Jungles of Kalran The Jungles of Kalran is perhaps the most dangerous place in all of Mythaven. Everything in Kalran wants to kill you. The jungles are tightly packed with huge trees (higher that the ones of the Tor), dense undergrowth, and predators in every shape and size. The main race of Kalran are the treefolk: a race of intelligent human-like creatures that are made to survive. Some treefolk have sharp thorns growing out of their skin, while others may have a thick bark or a layer of vines. The treefolk are barebone survivalists: their capital of Adory'san is simply a well-defended fort that passing treefolk use to restock on supplies. The treefolk are all hardened warriors, but respect and worship the nature around them.

Well, Ornithopters just got deployed and I lost the part I was working on. Thank the Magic gods that I decided to split the thing into bits. And, 6tennis, of course we can change the name. Mythaven is pretty much a placeholder.

I think it shouldn't be all t/o stuff. There can also be like regular vanilla creatures. Also Shingle, Kalran, Tor Deserts, Say'kala and Ashfield could be home to different tribes with different color identities .

6tennis The vanilla creatures would just make the general atmosphere of the world seem legit. Like what Wizards does with cards like Misthoof Kirin or something similar. It's not just for play, it's a whole world created.
The Kirin is good in draft though.
