I didn't want that old land anyways.

So I'm watching some Zombies vs Junk standard deck in the background while I breed pokemon and I had a really fun idea. Decent sideboard card in modern, potential blowout in EDH. Also good in standard with Evolving Wilds depending on the templating.

Doesn't work with Evolving Wilds

I know the first mode is more "fair" but the question we should ask before saying that the first mode is the winner is "how is the 2nd option broken"? Scapeshift is the only thing that comes to mind for Modern. Even Smallpox seems bad since you'd be throwing out a card in your hand as well.

Anyways I know we have enchantments costing 2-3 that totally protect our nonbasic lands in modern but lets face it, you can't play them because of Abrupt Decay.

Why not just make it a trap card design? That way, you don't have to build around it. Like this:

Growth Trap mana symbol 2mana symbol g

Instant

If a land was put into your graveyard from the battlefield this turn, you may pay mana symbol 0 rather than pay ~'s mana cost.

Search your library for a Forest card and put that card onto the battlefield tapped. Then shuffle your library.

You need until end of turn or the next time a spell effect ability...

if untill end of turn just save up 3 fetch lands then crack them for 6 mana cast Primeval Titan win

if next time then Crop Rotation negates wasteland for less by removing the target

growth trap is triggerd of your fetch lands. does modern want 0- get a forest. I think I can breack that somehow.

Oh you're right, what about this?

Growth Trap mana symbol 2mana symbol g

Instant

If a spell or ability an opponent controlled caused a land to be put into your graveyard from the battlefield this turn, you may pay mana symbol 0 rather than pay ~'s mana cost.

Search your library for a Forest card and put that card onto the battlefield tapped. Then shuffle your library.

I like the way that reads MagicalHacker. mana symbol 2mana symbol g means it won't be seeing any modern play but it's still useful in commander as a response to Obliterate or similar spells that are prevalent. It would be really fun to use this after somebodies terrastodon finishes resolving as they aren't expecting the floating mana to actually be relevant.

MagicalHacker's version seems interesting, however unless it was a rare it seems really strong. And I don't like the whole "just make it a rare" as a fix for good cards. If you made it get a basic forest then that would balance the card out a bit more I think.

kengiczar, well floating mana from lands before they're destroyed wouldn't be that useful since the spell becomes free.

enpc, Natural Connection is common, so uncommon seems fine for this.

Hm. Lets come at this from a different angle. I should have stated my design goals in the beginning.

  1. Design mana symbol 1mana symbol g version that can only ever get ONE "Forest".
To be used as answer to modern LD lands. Idea is sideboard card for people using 6-8 of Ghost Quarter and Tectonic Edge combined. I want this to work with the new Showlands, the Tango lands, and the Shock-lands.

  2. Design Trap version at CMC 3 but potentially free.
MagicalHacker's version seems great. So you both think basic forest for this? It's going to be uncommon. It's just one land after all. Thing is 3 mana is perfect for non-trap cost for standard but the 0 cost for the Trap is way to strong considering it costs 4-6 mana to blow up even one land nowdays. Maybe trap cost of mana symbol 1mana symbol g or mana symbol g to truly balance it for sets like Oath of the Gatewatch?

I would think most of the modern LD you see these days comes from Fulminator Mages. That's only 3 mana total and can be easily abused considering Kolaghan's Command is in the same colours.

I think that as an uncommon, yo ucna get away with tutoring any forest assuming the land enters tapped AND the trap cost is greater than zero (say mana symbol g as you mentioned). Because at he end of the day, a spell tha tgrabs a (non-basic) forest at instant speed for 3 mana is still really good. A lot of control decks would drool over that in that they don't have to tap out to ramp (I'm mainly talking EDH here though). But boggles would possibly run it as well, as an answer to Liliana of the Veil.

So maybe:

Growth Trap mana symbol 2mana symbol g

Instant - Trap

If a spell or ability an opponent controls would cause a land you control to be put into the graveyard, you may pay mana symbol g instead of Growth trap's casting cost.

Search your library for a forest forest card and put that card onto the battlefield tapped. Then shuffle you library.

I feel like that would be solid at uncommon.

I forgot about Fulminator + K-Command... argh....

Alright then that settles it! The Trap is as you say enpc.
