I have a question for you guys: why? why do you make cards when they clearly won't be made? any thoughts?

Well, it's fun. It's a good way to express your creativity, and for whenever you come up with a really good idea you just have to get out there.

MtG is a game. Exploring the mechanics and conventions of any game helps grant you greater understanding, appreciation, and mastery over it. It's kinda like asking an electrical engineer why he loves taking apart electronics. Things like curiosity, self-expression, the desire to create, and the yearning to understand are all powerful motives.
I also believe there is inherent value in actions themselves. Much like an unpublished manuscript can still make us laugh, some crafted MtG card can pique our interest and make us think about how cards are currently designed. After all, the cards we're given say something about both WotC and the players that stick by the game.

It can also be a way of making jokes like there were in unsets.
I frequently joke about:
Mecha-Stormcrow
Artifact Creature: Nightmare Bird Construct
Flying
1/2
Flavor Text: "Ach! Kozilek, run! It's MECHASTORMCROW!" -Emrakul, the Aeons Torn, last words
Or
We Still Won't Print It
Instant
Destroy target creature not named Tidehollow Sculler
Flavor Text: We thought you would have gotten the message after Doom Blade Go for the Throat Ultimate Price AND Victim of Night

It's a fun way to be creative in a casual environment... My friends and I even play some of them sometimes... It's fun :)

Some people incorperate these pretend cards into cubes, and post them here to see if there's anything inherently wrong with the design.

Why do we play MTG at all? Because it's our hobby, it make sus think and it's funny. Making custom cards just for lulz can be part of that.

I like to explore where Wizards decided not to go, like with the Gatless movement. Plus, one of my dreams is to work at Wizards, so I like to get some practice. And, like others have said, it's fun.

Its like being a fan of a band before they make a #1 hit. When we finally see a card of our devising in print, we scream to our friends 'I liked them before it was cool!'

Speaking of cards we'd like to see, how about?

Draw three cards.
Very similar to Fact or Fiction except this is hard to cast, nets you 3 cards instead of 2.5, doesn't bin cards, and digs 3 deep instead of 5.

I swear this exists, and Harmonize is a color shifted version of it.

Harmonize is the timeshifted version of Concentrate, which is but a sorcery.
If we add an extra , we get Jace's Ingenuity which is an instant.

The game offers something for most. Designing cards offers something for the Melvin in us who has an appreciation for mechanics, interactions and balance. When all of these interact with flavour it's that much more satisfying.
