Lightning shock-

instant

when you cast lightning shock, deal 2 damage to target creature or player

deal 2 damage to target creature or player and lose 4 life

Seems alright to me.

So it deals 2 damage when you cast it, 2 damage when it resolves, and you lose 4 life?

that would be correct, postmortal

Well, I would have a problem with the 4 for 4 but having a spell that still burns even if it's countered sounds fair that way.

seems fine. I like the idea of a burn spell that gets around counterspells.

This would be fun with Death's Shadow and still not OP even if you got the perfect start because it's so risky.

T1: Fetch+Shock + Bolt Opponent. Your at 17.
T2: Fetch+Shock + OP's Spell. Your at 10.
T3: Death's Shadow X3 and dare them to hit you. Continue drawing burn.

Generally, spells do not have that kind of "Eldrazi" cast trigger templating. Wouldn't it be simpler to have "Deal 4, lose 4, can't be countered"? Also, this is quite the upgrade to Flame Rift so I venture to say it is not printable in standard.

Burn effects that also burn you are never actually symmetrical.

But wasn't Flame Rift printed back when creatures were pretty shitty? I mean now-days this card is looking at environments where creatures like Siege Rhino or Goblin Rabblemaster have been known to exist. Like, creatures are pretty powerful now, so a one time effect that hurts you for 4 seems risky enough that the upgrade doesn't make it OP I would think.

Not really, creatures being strong is no excuse for a spell to be too undercosted for the effect. I mean you do have Tyrant's Choice for a one-sided Flame Rift, but it is not nearly as flexible as this and given that we just had Exquisite Firecraft, it really sets the bar for burn spells that hit for 4 damage.
