1st commander try

Deck Help forum

haven't tried commander yet, wondering if there are any staples that really help with this style. Tried slivers because of ability share, not sure how this will work in this style being such small creatures, but have potential to be huge...seems Commander would allow some huge creatures being played finally...I tried to google some info but right now its just late and I was finding only some generic info. Trying to make a decent commander deck, even if it means starting over. ><

I will say that if I ever sit down to play 1v1 EDH and see a sliver commander, I concede immediately and find someone else to play a game with. The same is true of a handful of notorious generals, I don't recall how to hyperlink but here's a recent article which is a good primer on some things not to do (though everyone does at least a few of these in their decks): http://tappedout.net/mtg-articles/2013/mar/2/krazycaley-miinor_threat-present-how-be-worst-edh-/

@Ptburham Definately appreciate the heads up on that one. I would definately prefer a deck that lost with flash and flair each time than a deck that was just no fun for anyone. Like I said I'm fairly knew to the game and just happened on to a few slivers and liked how they shared abilities. I only own a few but was trying to find a good commander deck to put together and buy the cards.

Guess I'll scrap the sliver idea for now, I was already looking at ways to protect a few key slivers, root sliver out first so they couldn't be countered soming in, and then cloak of invisibility on a couple key ones like legion of slivers...and plenty of counters to prevent extinctions...I have a card somewhere, forgot name, but it was a permanent counter spell basically, just needed to sacrifice a creature I believe and tap that card could counter anything. So I definately think I may have been taking it too far...><

@epochalyptik Thanks for linking that article, I'll take a look through there also before I try again. I really didn't like the idea of a 5 color deck in commander anyway. =) Hopefully I can better understand commander and build a competetive but fun deck. So far in playing just normal I tend to lose much more often than I win. Usually I sneak a win in only when other people battle each other and I'm just the last man standing. lol

Slivers aren't that good in EDH, to be quite honest. Aggro decks as a whole are lackluster. The only way they work is if they're based on general damage, such as Rafiq of the Many or Uril, the Miststalker. That's not to say, however, slivers wouldn't be a fun deck to play. I say go for it.

I'm of the opinion if it's not banned, then it's fair game. EDH allows sideboards for a reason.

@sylvannos: Slivers are actually a decent combo deck.

@ptburnham: I think you're being unnecessarily presumptuous about how other players build decks, but there is a valid point to your argument. I will argue that because every player is different and there are multiple ways to approach deckbuilding, it isn't accurate to say that certain generals necessitate certain decks.

@Epochalyptik well yeah, but key word is "decent." They're just not something I would scoop to upon seeing someone show Sliver Overlord as their general, even in one on one. Slivers are still cool and flavorful with some tricks up their sleeve.

@Epochalyptik: I wasn't necessarily trying to dissuade shdwflare8 from building that deck; I was trying to build on what your article says, mostly to make the point that EDH is supposed to be a sociall format. But yeah, if it's not too overpowered for his play group then have at it.

@sylvannos: My $170 Vig deck can't compete with competitive decks. Not to mention that it's slow so against tribal of almost any kind my deck fails pretty hard. It wins in multiplayer frequently though.
