If my opponents cast Phantasmal Image copyin my legendary creature, Will a counterspell save my legendary or it's too late cause of the stack?

i would think that the counter spell resolves before the summon, so a copy has never entered the battlefield.

704.5k If two or more legendary permanents with the same name are on the battlefield, all are put into their owners graveyards. This is called the legend rule. If only one of those permanents is legendary, this rule doesnt apply.

so they never see each other and you are golden.

A spell will not become a permanent in play until it resolves. If it is countered, it never enters the battlefield or resolves, so your legendary creature should be safe.

Unless they have clearly declared their intentions first or the only reasonable choice is to copy the legend you don't get to know what it is copying until it resolves though. Same thing with cards like Oblivion Ring where the ability works on the battlefield and not on the stack.

@Dritz: Oblivion Ring 's ETB ability does use the stack.

I believe what Dritz is saying is that at the time you would counter Oblivion Ring you will most likely not know what it will exile. Once it's ability goes on the stack and a target is chosen, it is too late to counter it.
