3+ player games with U/W control?

Deck Help forum

I've discovered after a few matches that my U/W control deck excels in 1 v 1 matches but doesn't do so well in matches with 3+ people. I was wondering if this is a common problem.

Also, are there any cards that would make U/W more of a contender in matches such as these? The deck I've been using is just a baby deck I made from the deck builder's toolkit at the moment but I'm planning on making purchases as necessary.

Thanks.

It does require you to be far more selective with your spells. A few things that help in the 3 way match would be Curse of ExhaustionMTG Card: Curse of Exhaustion and something like Erayo, Soratami AscendantMTG Card: Erayo, Soratami Ascendant.

Control is not really meant for multiplayer games; there's just going to be too much to deal with.

For the best results, you may have to design a UW deck that is dedicated to handling multiplayer games alone. Board wipes like Day of JudgmentMTG Card: Day of Judgment are a powerful tool, and you might also want to consider cards like Glen Elendra ArchmageMTG Card: Glen Elendra Archmage (a bit pricey if you're working on a budget...) and Grand Arbiter Augustin IVMTG Card: Grand Arbiter Augustin IV.

I'm playing the world's tiniest violin for you right now.

But on a more serious note, stock on up counterspells and UnsummonMTG Card: Unsummon-like cards and perfect your psychological warfare game, leaving lands untapped to make people think that targeting you is a bad thing.

Well, targeting the control player usually is a bad thing. I think a multiplayer control deck should probably focus more on AoE/enduring control rather than just being packed with one-shot counterspells.

Perhaps you could take the enchantment control approach and load up with Rhystic StudyMTG Card: Rhystic Study, PropagandaMTG Card: Propaganda, and Ghostly PrisonMTG Card: Ghostly Prison... That might actually be quite effective.

Norn's AnnexMTG Card: Norn's Annex is another, similar option.

So, it sounds like I need to focus on controlling the battlefield rather than just having answers to individual threats.

Pretty much. You might still have a few counterspells and maybe an Into the RoilMTG Card: Into the Roil or two, but the most effective control is the kind that can protect you from every opponent at once or do it persistently. Since it's an incredible drain on resources to try to shut down every threat, you have to be very selective about what you do both in game and at the drawing board.

I see. Makes perfect sense, really. Looks like I gotta start roaming online or opening boosters. Heh.

I appreciate the help and card suggestions. Thanks

No problem. I would do some research and build an online decklist first, then buy or trade for those cards. Opening boosters won't really help you as much when you already have a decklist or an idea in mind.
