Any hope for infect?

Deck Help forum

Hey Everybody, I just got back into Magic after about 15yrs and was really excited to try infect. My league is playing 60 card decks built from mostly Mirrodin Besieged booster packs with some Scars thrown in for extra substance. No draft, I'm stuck with what I unwrapped. I tried to assemble a B/G infect deck from my card pool and got my ass kicked across town. I felt like I needed more control so Im working with B/G/U now. It still doesnt feel very strong though. I only have a couple 2-drop infectors and Im only making use of 2 of 12 available rares. The Maybeboard is my available card pool to illustrate what Im dealing with. I gotta whittle this down to sixty but wondering if its even worth moving forward with this."I thought you were playing infect" ... "So did I"So the question is do I have any chance of putting together a decent infect deck from my available card pool or should I scrap that idea and move on to a different strategy? Im up against other decks with the same limited card pool to draw from but so far Ive just been getting spanked. Im still getting up to speed with how Magic has evolved since the mid-90s and thought infect would be fun but maybe it just isnt in the cards this time.

Any suggestions to improve the infect deck or other directions I should try would be great! Thanks in advance!

It's difficult to build a purely infect deck from such a limited number of cards. However, there is potential in what you have. The most difficult part will be in determining what to run colorwise. The more colors you run, the more chance there is for the deck to have problems.

Blue is good control, but so is black with the infect mechanic, and in particular with these last two sets.

My suggestion is to separate out all the infect cards available to you, then divide it into piles by color. Pick the pool with the strongest cards in it (best power/toughness combos, lowest cost for what you get, most flexibility). That should be your primary color. Pick one other color to support it. See where you get with that.

You can't be afraid to cut something if it has a higher cost than it's worth or if it doesn't help you accomplish your win-con.

Sure. You've got a pretty great black / green infect deck hiding in there -- your goal should probably to be use all your ramp and card advantage -- Leaden Myr , Plague Myr , Viridian Emissary , Ichor Wellspring + Piston Sledge , and Morbid Plunder -- to get Phyrexian Vatmother or Phyrexian Juggernaut on the board as quickly as possible; that plus 5 copies of Unnatural Predation should seal it up pretty fast, especially with the excellent removal suite you've got.

blue is a trap for you. you have 3 blightwidows and 3 scourge servants, plus phyrexian vatmother and the juggernaut -- just go straight b/g and run them over.

turn 1 Virulent Wound turn 2 ramp turn 3 either Phyrexian Vatmother , blightwidow, or a Plague Myr or Flensermite wearing a Piston Sledge is pretty serious beats.

here's my take on your pool: "I thought you were playing infect" ... "So did I"

...cos we all know 5 copies are better than 4

usually in sealed formats like this one you get to use all cards available to you, inlcuding 5 copies of 1 card if that happens to be the case.

I agree with landot, his build seems pretty strong.

What i would add is 1x Darksteel Juggernaut , 1x Precursor Golem and 1x Skinwing .

The first is just to add some inevitability, even though it's not infect.

The second is just stupid good, as chump or attacker, having some regular damage is not bad if you use it correctly. and hell, it can win you the game in 2 turns with 2x Unnatural Predation .

The third is to give some evasion to an infecter of your choice. Even though it's expensive, i say it's worth it. Try to keep your mana curve down a bit though, remove spells from the 4cmc slot for these cards.

Good luck!

And one more thing: how many boosters did you pull for this? I'd like to do something similar with friends!

Thanks for the input everybody! Great community here. There seems to be a pretty clear consensus on which direction to take this. I like the additions youve suggested. My concern early on was in adding too many creatures that didnt have infect but I clearly see how they can help things out. Are there any thoughts on Phyresis ? Would it make sense to toss in a couple to possibly create an infectious Perilous Myr or deck:thopter-assembly or dropping it on the Darksteel Juggernaut that jesse suggested adding?

Anyway Ive got some things to try out. Thanks again!

To answer your question, jesse, my league got together and each unwrapped 6 booster packs (3 Besieged and 3 Scars) from which we built 40 card decks. We each left with 5 additional Besieged boosters and we open one per week, eventually reaching a point where the decks jump to sixty cards. Its great, a new pack every week keeps things interesting and keeps hope alive.

I still have a couple packs to open. fingers crossed

Phyresis is not a good card for your deck. A bit of a waste imo. Also i think when attached to perilous myr, if the myr dies i'd think they're both put into the graveyard seperately, causing the 2damage the myr can deal to be regular. I'm not sure of that though.

I might try the 'continuous sealed deck' construction. Thanks!
