Are Illusions without Lord of the Unreal a good idea?

Deck Help forum

The deck came out of the illusionary might event deck. I thought it was pretty neat that the illusion cards were undercosted for being flimsy. Would it be a good idea to have them stay without hexproof so they could take the brunt of enemy spells whilst i set up for a combo with solition and Heavy Arbalest using Grand Architect to get them on the battlefield. or do most people just register that its not worth using a Go for the Throat on something as menial as an illusion, which would die if you took a Giant Growth to it?

Phantasmal Image and Phantasmal Bear are worth it without Lord of the Unreal . Phantasmal Dragon is iffy because it costs more and any targeting situation could kill it.

I would say no because of the hex proof ability. Add in swiftfoot boots for your lord and your set.

My gut says no - there are so many ways to target illusions in standard, so it's like there are 100 different ways to Cunning Sparkmage /Basilisk Collar your dudes.

A Swiftfoot Boots equipped Lord of the Unreal is almost an absolute for this deck.

YES!!! In the standard format, the only real removal is Doom Blade etc. That's a 2cmc spell to take down a 1cmc bear. It's worth it for 3 reasons:

  1. You get on the board for early damage
  2. You waste their removal spell; and
  3. They will be tapped out on turn 2, letting you cast anything you want without being afraid of a counterspell

well, the deck revolves around the illusions and Grand Architect , if the illusions cant make it through the offensive, Soliton and Heavy Arbalest should make up for the losses. hopefully they waste their removal on the illusions so the Neurok Commando s can get some draw in and get the combo cards. i'm not sure if Porcelain Legionnaire or Ice Cage has a place here though...

Let me tell you a story about a deck that got 9th place at SCG Open Richmond. It was Illusions with 4 Lord of the Unreal , 4 Grand Architect if you plan on running an Illusions deck then you will want 4 of each of those creatures. If you want to have a deck that just has them because they are at a higher power level for the CMC then you should just play counterspells.

The deck I'm talking about: SCG Standard 9th Place

The Illusionary Might deck just isn't very good to begin with but if you're going to use the "flimsy" illusions then yeah I would suggest a Lord of the Unreal or 2 and a couple Phantasmal Images. He has a blanket effect so it won't kill off your creatures and even if you don't get him out right away then you just waste their target spells till you bring out the big guns.
