Azorious Control standard possible on a budget?

Deck Help forum

Posted on June 10, 2013, 1:54 a.m. by Impose

I've been playing about 3 weeks. made a mono black exalted aggro, an RDW aggro deck and a mono black control deck

Im enjoying control far more than I am aggro in magic. I know blue is pretty much the control of the game. However I don't want to do mono as I am with my mono black deck in my profile. Options seem slightly limited. So Im wondering if an Azorious control deck is possible to be competative in standard FNM tournaments with maybe 100-120 dollars put into it

it CAN be. . . but not if your going the detain route. and also not for competitive...because your land base itself is going to cost 100-120 dollars

You should be able to put something similar to this together for your price range. Spiral-ling

Thanks for input guys

Im trying not to put ridiculous amounts of money into a single deck that I won't enjoy playing.

thats why i made a bunch of budget decks of different types. I enjoy playing aggro but the control aspect just seems much more fun. Chess match thinking sort of levels.

Thanks

I'm running a budget Azorius Control deck Azorius-ly? So now that can't attack either..., in Modern. But if you swapped out Day of Judgment for AEtherize or Blustersquall or Feeling of Dread I think you can still pull it off.

For a deck that costs around 30 dollars, I'd say it runs pretty smoothly, though I'm not sure it'll stand up to a more expensive deck. Also has weaknesses in the control v control match-up.

i'd run a deck using cards like Cloudshift , Ghostly Flicker , Conjurer's Closet etc, then have annoying blinkers like Captain of the Watch , or the best imo Lavinia of the Tenth . Early game slowing down play with spheres, verdicts, negates etc.

also..No Sphinx's Revelation if you're playing budget. which basically means you're the worst version of a control deck that can exist if you dont have that draw engine in today's standard. it basically time warps you in standard. and lets you survive aggro decks, WHICH THERE ARE A LOT OF.

So imo, budget azorius control is impossible to do for competition. Or budget anything for that matter. Standard is built upon the wallets of net-deckers.

it is very very very uncommon to see a homebrew win a competition. Rogue decks are not easily done.

Weston Ayarza: I get your point, and I agree. Though I would say that it IS possible to build decent decks for your local games store's FNM. Sure you'll lack the power of the individual card, but you can build synergies on budget cards. Rest for the Weary for example, will help you against aggro, even though not being nearly as good a card as Sphinx's Revelation .

Budget really is all about building a deck that is not dependent on the money/power-cards. You'll have to sacrifice creativity and quirkiness, but you can pull a halfway decent deck out of it.

ApocryphalSaint: Indeed. Though you might sneak a Top 8 with a 50 dollar deck, if you're smart about it.

@ColeyPTrain: Though that's not within the 100-120 dollar range that OP specified.

The core of the deck would be:

3x Sphinx's Revelation ($70)
4x Hallowed Fountain ($36)
4x Glacial Fortress ($12)
2x AEtherling ($10)
4x Supreme Verdict ($20)
4x Azorius Charm ($2)
4x Think Twice ($1)

...which is about $150 total. If you don't run shocks and check lands, it's about $100. You really can't play the deck, though, without the Sphinx's Revelation s and Supreme Verdict s.

By smart about it you mean you design a deck that was purely built to destroy your meta...and would fail in almost any other setting XD. . i personally find the best rogue decks are those built of two combined Tier1-2 decks.

@ApocryphalSaint: Exactly. I mean if you're mainly looking to win your own FNM, you could build a meta-hate deck and steal some wins.
