I've been playing this Azorius Control deck Perfecting Azorius Control. at my local FNM's and it's been performing pretty well, but I'm curious if it couldn't do better if I added another color. I can't afford the switch to Esper because Thoughtseize is so necessary and I don't have any, so I've been considering American. This is the deck I came up with Creatureless In Standard?.
I already own the shock lands for the American color combo, so the switch would be easy, but I want to know if anyone has experience playing American in the current Standard, and if so; how is it doing? My meta tends to be a fair bit of aggro in white-weenie, rdw, and mono-u devotion, and also a few mono-black devotion and esper control decks.
Between the two, the Azorius list looks a lot more streamlined. The American list just seems to introduce a bunch of potentially really bad or dead cards, though I also have played and tested between the two and can attest to the power of Assemble the Legion .
Though out of the Azorius list, not a fan of the 24 lands and Render Silent . I think those choices just add a bunch of unnecessary inconsistency to the deck with little to no gain.

I played tons of UWR control after the first few weeks of Standard once I knew what the meta was like. I have updated my list and will now be playing it instead of my Naya deck since I like the consistency of UWR over a clunky, yet powerful, Naya deck.
I've incorporated Divination
s and Elixir of Immortality
in slots that used to be Steam Augury
and Izzet Charm
and the results have been fantastic; I heavily recommend Divination
as it really doesn't become apparent how useful it is until you try it. My other suggestion would be to make sure you are using Azorius Charm
, which is currently missing from your UWR decklist, and also to try having at least 25 and preferably 26 lands.
Overall, I prefer UWR because adding red gives you Assemble the Legion and better sideboard cards, but in general, UW has been putting up more results because more people are using it for its fantastic consistency. Ultimately, your color choice really depends on your playstyle.
