Bane Alley Broker viable in casual standard?

Deck Help forum

I'm looking to add some draw power to my standard UB mill deck, Perfection of Milling 2.0, and Legionnaire suggested Bane Alley Broker (in addition to traditional draw cards). I think she has potential, but is she worth it over Read the Bones / Pilfered Plans ?

What do you guys think about her? I think she has a decent toughness to mill with, and the ability to protect against Duress and Thoughtseize ... Is she worth it?

"Viable in casual?" you actually typed those words out....

Casual decks don't automatically work, the same as any other deck.

I tried making her work. The main factors why I haven't put her in my deck has been:

  • it will take four turns before she can actually do some good, aside from blocking.
  • she will most likely be killed when she exiles a card, which prompts you to reserve a card slot just to protect her (counterspells, hexproof etc.) or use a counter spell you could have used for some bigger, meaner spell from your opponent
  • most times she is just a "Draw one, discard one" for 1UB
  • you're better off using Quicken with Pilfered Plans or Read the Bones . instant draws, last I checked, are always better (hehe)

I wish one of her two abilities didn't involve tapping her, then she'd be a little bit better. She does put a body behind a draw card though, which could be helpful... Maybe a SB card if Thoughtscour is destroying me?

you mean Thoughtseize ? Dimir Charm is always good against Thoughtseize , or if you really are desperate to counter it use Swan Song .

Yup, sorry. I think I'm focusing too much on countering Thoughtseize ... She would be interesting but I'm not sure about making her work...

My main idea was viewing her as a cheap Underworld Connections . I've only semi-effectively used her in Grixis control casual decks, and rarely for her second ability. Here, she's just draw 1, discard 1, and 2 devotion towards Phenax.

I think you should use it. In casual games, part of the fun is in doing things differently: running an unusual deck, old cards, Un-set cards, obscure interactions, multiplayer chaos, etc. I think it's great when you get "What on earth's a Floodgate !?" moments or whatever.
