Borborygmos Enraged and Illusionist's Bracers

Deck Help forum

Hey I was wondering if I put an Illusionist's Bracers on Borborygmos Enraged does both abilities get doubled? i.e. I attack with and cause combat damage then I mill 3 cards from my deck putting the lands in my hand - then the bracers kick in and I repeat with 3 more cards from my deck into my graveyard/hand. Then when I discard a land to deal 3 damage do the bracers deal an additional 3 damage so that effectively each land card I discard deal 6 damage?

Also if I have a Strionic Resonator out and activate it after Borborygmos deals damage, with the bracers also on, i can then mill for 9 taking all the lands?

i believe Borborygmos Enraged 2nd ability is a triggered one and the 3rd is an activated ability since has a cost (discarding a land card)

so you will be able to copy the 2nd with Strionic Resonator

and the 3rd with Illusionist's Bracers

If I'm correct, Strionic Resonator will copy Borborygmos's first ability (the one with "whenever"), meaning you would reveal another 3 cards, put all lands in your hand and the rest in the graveyard.

Illusionist's Bracers will copy his second ability (the one with cost:effect), in his case, discard a land (cost), deal 3 damage (effect). Copying it will still require you to pay the cost again.

You can copy the effect from Illusionist's Bracers with Strionic Resonator , though.

You will not have to discard another land to copy the activated ability with Illusionist's Bracers .

Huh...I guess it can since the Bracers have "whenever". So in that case, when you activate Borborygmos' second ability:

  1. discard a land (cost), deal 3 damage (effect)

  2. copy that ability with Illusionist's Bracers , so discard a land and deal 3 damage again

  3. copy Bracers ability with Strionic Resonator , so a third instance of discard a land and deal 3 damage.

Ok, so you'd only discard one land, then if you did the copying with Bracers then Resonator, it would end up as you only discarding one land and doing 9 damage.

Also, Strionic Resonator is the only thing that would work for Borborygmos' first ability as it's a triggered ability. So at most you'd only get to check 6 for land (unless you had more Resonators on the field). Illusionist's Bracers doesn't work as that only applies to activated abilities.

The Deck Help forum is meant for help with decklists. Rules questions should be asked in the Q&A. I can't move this thread to the Q&A, so I'll move it to General.

Ok thanks for the comments everyone, especially brokendwarf. The thing that's tripping me up is the wording, I understand that Bory's 1st ability is a 'triggered ability' which the Strionic Resonator can copy, but why can't the bracers copy it? "Whenever an ability of equipped creature is activated"... When Bory deals damage his 1st ability activates, doesn't it? Even though it is a 'triggered ability' that ability is being activated when he deals damage. If there is something in the rules specifically regarding a difference between 'activated' and 'triggered' abilities then I will fully accept that, but based off the wording on the cards I think the bracers should be able to dupe the 1st ability.

Activated abilities, which are written "[cost]: [effect]," are activated. They don't trigger.

Triggered abilities, which begin with at, when, or whenever, are triggered. They don't activate.

Activate and trigger are not the same thing.

Activated abilities are always written in the form "COST: EFFECT". Look for the colon, that's the main identifier. If there's no colon, it's not an activated ability.

Triggered abilities start with "at", "when", or "whenever". They tend to be written in the form "At/when/whenever (trigger event), (sometimes there's an additional "if" clause), (effect)".
