Teshar: HATEBEARSSSS

Hey all.

I'm really starting to enjoy brawl, as it's helping me get some of my hesitant friends into magic! Currently I run a Demonlord Belzenlok deck, but I feel like I should try something else out to fight them with. Looking around at possible commanders I found Teshar, Ancestor's Apostle, and really like him, but can't make a list I feel is any good. I know mono-colored decks are hard for brawl, but I like the challenge and my friends all picked their commanders (they all happened to be mono-colored) and I thought I'd join in on the theme.

Overall I'm just stumped. I really want to make this guy work. I think with this list it's a sorta hatebears control situation but I can't find a way to end the game.

So TLDR:

  1. I'm making a deck for around $40 to play with to teach my friends how to play magic.

  2. I wanna make it Teshar, Ancestor's Apostle.

  3. I can't figure out how to win with it, or make it really go into the long game.

Any thoughts?

It's possible to try to combo with Teshar, Ancestor's Apostle, but because Brawl is a singleton format it becomes pretty convoluted and difficult.

The combo would involve having Teshar on the battlefield with Scrap Trawler and Sanctum Spirit. You would also need Metalwork Colossus in your hand or graveyard, and either a Mox Amber or an Ornithopter in hand.

You can then discard the Metalwork Colossus to Sanctum Spirit, cast the Ornithopter (or Mox Amber) and sacrifice it and Scrap Trawler to return Metalwork Colossus to your hand. Use the Scrap Trawler's trigger to return Ornithopter to your hand, then cast it and use Teshar's trigger to return Scrap Trawler to play.

You can repeat this process ad infinitum. Then if you have an Aetherflux Reservoir or Bontu's Monument on the battlefield you can win from the triggers.

All that being said, it's probably way to convoluted to be a reliable win condition. And it would involve adding quite a few cards to the deck. But I thought I'd mention it just in case you're a fan of janky combo wins like I am.

Thanks for the idea. As awesome as this sounds, my playgroup even though just starting out has come to know I love artifacts. And with that if they can the add Forsake the Worldly and Abrade. Or they tell me to since I'm the brewer, heck they just say gimme something to get rid of those lol.

Maybe I'm trying the wrong commander out.

What about Danitha Capashen, Paragon?

There are about 5-7 auras in Standard that stop a creature from attacking or blocking, which you can use as pseudo-removal. Then you can try and play voltron with a bunch or aura's and equipment.

Approach of the Second Sun is the best win con in mono white.

@Drakorya

Hm. That is interesting. So you think I could maybe make it an enchantress deck focused around auras?

@Boza

Noted. It'll definitely get in the next rendition of the deck.

Enchantress could work, but I'd also run equipment since they won't be destroyed if your opponent has removal for your commander. I'd definitely run Blackblade Reforged and Helm of the Host.

There are also some protection spells like Adamant Will and Sheltering Light to protect against removal.

Hm okay. I went to my shop today, cracked a pack or two and got Raff Capashen, Ship's Mage. I think he would be great at the helm of a deck with Teshar in it. What do you think?

I love the idea of Raff in Brawl! Playing stuff at instant speed is always fun and usually good.

I actually made a decklist for him in Brawl a while back. You can check it out for some ideas if you'd like:
