Budget Legacy / Modern

Deck Help forum

Posted on June 25, 2013, 10:40 p.m. by NobodyPicksBulbasaur

Part of the reason I never got into Legacy or Modern is because of the high price to entry, largely because of the expensive mana bases in the format.

Are there any FNM-caliber (i'm not trying to win a PTQ here) Legacy or Modern decks that I can throw together without having to sell my car and a kidney?

Which decks are able to run with a cheap mana base?

If possible, I'd like the deck to be at least a little bit quirky so that it remains fun. I know that Affinity is pretty budget as far as Legacy is concerned, but it doesn't seem all that fun to me.

Ideas?

infect in modern, this kind of deck in legacy I spy with my little eye, a T1 win

You might be able to build a relatively low budget Merfolk deck that you can use for both Modern and Legacy. Or a mono-red Goblins or Burn deck.

I'm not a fan of instant combos (granted that one's just convoluted enough to not quite make me mad yet)

And Goblins/Merfolk are decent, but I'm pretty sure they're about 40% of my local meta. It's no fun if everybody's running the same thing.

Deck i made in about 5mins and found was hilarious is probably the best way to go for modern. You'll only have to sell a Voice of Resurgence and you have a deck and some change. Add in Path to Exile and it's quite viable considering its price.

I've been looking into Melira Pod Modern decks because I have a good chunk of the expensive cards from that already. Would that deck fare decently in an FNM Legacy environment? My local shop doesn't play Modern, so I would be up against Legacy decks. I just like the Modern format more-so than Legacy.

Combo Elves, splashing blue for Beck / Call to keep you drawing, then Craterhoof Behemoth or Grapeshot as your win condition?

It probably wouldn't go well in legacy. It wins it's fair share of games against top-tier modern, but legacy I wouldn't expect much even from a top-tier modern deck.

For modern:

Well, the merfolk match makes Quest for the Spinning Temple (Quest for Ula's Temple ) bad.

You don't like combo so I Wash My Hands Of This Weirdness (Blistercoil Weird ) is out.

Try I Fight For the Users! (U Tron), Goblin Deck Wins (Goblin RDW), or look up Zoo, all of those are fairly inexpensive.

I do enjoy that equipment deck lol. Fun brew. Probably not what I'm gonna sleeve up, though. Keep the good ones coming.

I'm new to the site and only play modern now, my friends and I do a ton of brewing and my most recent discovery is a twist on Gerry Thompson's Reanimator deck from months ago. I'll post the whole deck list soon but it's just u/b with white for Unburial Rites , and the main interactions are Goryo's Vengeance for either Griselbrand or Nicol Bolas as early as turn two. Relatively inexpensive and a complete blast to play.

Goddamn Rule Changes... is a modern deck that I only put a few dollars into. It was pretty cheap and really REALLY fun to play.

For Legacy, Combo Elves is cheap, the most expensive card being Gaea's Cradle . However, you don't need anything else but basic Forest s, and Gaea's Cradle may end up getting banned due to the new legendary rules.

RDW, Tron, and U/R are really inexpensive decks to make for Modern.

Here's the link for my Esper Reanimator deck. You can cut the Snapcaster Mage and play without fetches and it drops the price by $350ish. Definitely quirky and very fun to play if that's what you're looking for.

I think this is your Esper Reanimator deck.

You are correct, sorry for the mis-link.

Alright new question:

What's the most entertaining Modern-Legal target for Goryo's Vengeance ?

Griselbrand makes for an amazing one, Iona, Shield of Emeria is good too.

June 26, 2013 2:04 p.m.

Pretty sure Iona makes a horrible target since she's not gonna stay around. Just sayin.

Ohthenoises says... #21

She would be a 7/7 with haste that won't be picked off by removal. That's not horrible.

Emrakul, the Aeons Torn is enough to win the game on the spot with the annihilator 6...then he gets shuffled back in.

June 26, 2013 4:16 p.m.

Griselbrand is the go to goryo's target, but I also love the oft neglected Nicol Bolas . Yup, reprinted in time spiral and totally modern legal. He actually is more forboding than Griselbrand in some situations.

June 26, 2013 7:19 p.m.

Another entertaining target is The Unspeakable . It returns goryo's vengeance! :p too cute to matter but it is entertaining. I toyed with the idea of a Cloudshift and Momentary Blink Reanimator deck bouncing your goryo's targets so they stuck around, but those two spells are absolutely horrible when you're not doing that. Obzedat, Ghost Council made my Esper Reanimator list because it's trigger can remove it if you stack it after the goryo's trigger and you get it back on the next upkeep. Pretty neat ;) ;)

June 26, 2013 7:23 p.m.

Nicol Bolas for entertainment value, Obzedat, Ghost Council for actual value, it escapes the exile trigger on goryo's vengeance.
