Budget player needing assistance
Deck Help forum

I've been playing Magic on and off ever since Kamigawa. I haven't started getting serious until recently, and apparently I don't know as much as I thought I did when building a competitive deck. I want to get into tournament play, but I'm just needing assistance in how to build a quality deck that can compete without me having to spend ridiculous amounts of money. Thanks in advance :)

@PotatoPi I'd like to remain in Standard. I know that's the most expensive of the formats, but its one I play the most.
@thyhax Well, i'd really like to stay under $50 for now. Just because I'm just now starting out and if things go horribly, I don't want to have a lot of money dumped into it.
I've made two decks(One I'm considering to build, and the one I already have) that you can look at if you'd like.

To be in competitive "serious" play, you must be willing to spend a few dollars. Now I'm not saying spend $500 on a standard deck right now especially with most of the meta rotating. I suggest going with a decent aggro deck (either RDW or Black/Red) as these are usually the cheapest to build and have a decent shot of placing "in the money" (if not winning on a good night).
If you go B/R I would go with the unleash creatures and make sure your average mana cost is 4 or less. These will usually beat out an opponent's creatures early. Just don't overextend into a Supreme Verdict .
If you choose to go mono red, I would suggest spending a little bit of money and picking up the full 4 x Burning Earth . many a game has been won by this card in late games when an opponent can't tap a land for mana

Hi Karny
How about checking this one Pump Mono GreenTry to test it with other decks this is the cheapest that I can get that's very competitive.

Here. Karny's Mono-Red is what I threw together. You may also be interested in mtgtop8, this lists winning RDW decklists from recent MTGO and paper events.
If you do go monored, consider upgrading to Boros Reckoner and Mutavault . Both are out of your $50 budget, but they are worthwhile investments if the deck is working out.

Oh, also Karny, other good choices for red include Ogre Battledriver and Mizzium Mortars . Just in case.

Thanks thyhax It looks quite similar to mine except for Hellrider and Legion Loyalist . I wanted to throw those in, but tried to keep it as cheap as possible, but after play a few games it seems I need that extra power. Ogre Battledriver looked really good, but didn't know for sure if it would work in or not. I already grabbed a pair of Mizzium Mortars . I do plan on getting Boros Reckoner and Mutavault but that will take some time seeing as they are kinda pricey. I really appreciate the help though.

Build a Red Deck Wins type of deck - it shouldn't cost a fortune, but it may waver come rotation.
