B/U/G in Modern
Deck Help forum

What are some of the major B/U/G Archetypes in modern. I am looking to build one for the future and have absolutely no idea where to start.
There isn't really a netdeck for B/U/G in Modern at this time. As for archetypes, you would probably be best off going with midrange, but you could make a control deck if you felt like it.
The biggest challenge you'll have in those colors is that blue and green don't get along in modern. Green wants to run at your opponent full force whereas blue wants to hold back and play more reserved. The colors work in Legacy because Force of Will and it's ilk make it possible to do both at the same time.
The direction I would take is probably a list resembling the Jund lists of old but with blue instead of red. I would keep blue to a splash for Snapcaster Mage , and use it to get extra value out of your Abrupt Decay , Inquisition of Kozilek , Thoughtseize and Maelstrom Pulse .

Yeah, that's pretty much where the delver option sort of headed. Maybe even drop the cliques and go with 2 oozes. You could shorten the number of counters and run some other removals in black. It could work.

Snapcaster, Bob, Goyf, and straight up removal to the max. Think jund, then switch out the red for blue. So lightning bolt for Spell Pierce, Spell Snare, terminate for cryptic command, etc.

At least that's what I have in mind for the archetype

I'm not so sure about Spell Pierce and Cryptic Command .
Cryptic Command is an auto include if he wants to go control, but he'll pretty much have to build his mana base around it.
Spell Pierce is only good when you can limit your opponent's mana base or when you want to get crazy aggressive. I'm not even 100% sold on it in U/R Delver builds in Modern.
Snapcaster Mage , Dark Confidant and Tarmogoyf are spot on.

So I'm thinking a control route with Creeping Tar Pit as a primary way of doing damage. What high value cards besides Cryptic Command and Snapcaster Mage are necessary. I am requesting non-land essentials as i know 3 color decks require fetches.

4 decays. I stand by that.
Liliana of the veil is OP as fuck.
Fuck it, go with a Jund-ish build. You'll thank me for it later.
The sideboard would almost be the same.

So it would be Jund with a blue "splash" for snappy and cryptic?

There was a BUG player in at LGS and he ran Shadowmage Infiltrator as another good beater. Although, I am not sure this deck is still viable without Deathrite. But Shadowmage is good along side Tar Pit

In the control route you'd most likely be looking at 45% blue 35% black 20% green.
Cryptic Command , Snapcaster Mage , Dark Confidant , Inquisition of Kozilek , Thoughtseize , Abrupt Decay , and Maelstrom Pulse are all necessary in some amount if you want a good control shell in my opinion.
From there you have the option of Tarmogoyf , Mana Leak , Remand , Liliana of the Veil , Vendilion Clique , and whatever else you want really.
Just be careful that your mana base doesn't get too greedy.

So something like: 4x Cryptic Command , 4x Snapcaster Mage , 4x Abrupt Decay , 3x Thoughtseize , 3x Inquisition of Kozilek , 3x Spell Snare , 4x, Maelstrom Pulse , 3x Kiora, the Crashing Wave , 4x Tarmogoyf , 4x Eternal Witness as a starting point?

I dont know if you would want Kiora in a format dominated by Bolt

What would be a good replacement for Kiora, the Crashing Wave then?

My deck, which often gets second place, is modern bug. It's Do the Creep. Good luck with yours

I would nix Kiora, the Crashing Wave and reduce the amount of Spell Snare and Maelstrom Pulse to 2 each. I'm also not sure if a full 4 Eternal Witness is the right number since you'll be recurring most everything with Snapcaster Mage anyway.
Try to make room for a playset of Dark Confidant if you can. Other than that I would try to run Scavenging Ooze in some amount just for some mainboard lifegain, GY hate and beats. Vendilion Clique might not be a bad idea either, and I think Remand could be decent depending on how much you want to focus on tempo.

The Eternal Witness es are essentially four more copies of Snapcaster Mage . I think I'll drop Kiora and a Snare in favor of four Bob

I was tinkering with BUG delver. It can be done. It looks solid. Just google that archetype, and you will see a few primers. One of them had a creature base that looked like:
4x Bobs4x Goyfs4x Delvers4x Snapcasters2x Cliques
Then of course the spells were:4x Lillis4x Remand3x Mana Leak2x Spell Snare4x A. Decayand some other shit.
Its a start.
Run 3x Tar pits and appropriate fetches... and gain profit.
