What version of a card is counted towards the formating of a deck?
for example if i have Sol Ring and I got it from a commander pack I bought does that update it to be as recent as the block that the commander deck was released in. This is probably a bad example but i hope you can all see where i'm trying to go with this. If you don't understand I'll try to clarify more.
the reason I'm asking is I'm trying to get my decks I've built from
vintage - legacy - modern and so on

For formats where the legal cards are defined by a list of core sets expansion sets, only cards printed in those sets are legal in the format. A card printed in a special box set, like Commander or Archenemy, is only legal in a format if one of the core sets or expansions in that format has its own printing of that card. Your Sol Ring from the Commander box set is still only legal in Vintage and Commander, because none of the core sets or expansions in Standard, Modern, or Extended contain Sol Ring , and the card is specifically banned in Legacy.
Like bcurran says, if a card is legal in a format because of being printed in an appropriate core set or expansion set, any printing of that card can be played in that format. Mana Leak s from Stronghold can be played in a Standard FNM.

Legacy and Vintage include all cards ever printed, even in "special" sets like Commander and From the Vaults.
Standard, Modern, and Extended have a defined list of which sets are allowed, which only ever include Core Sets and Blocks. Cards from "special" sets like Commander are not necessarily legal in these formats unless they already would be based on being in a "normal" set.
Furthermore, if a card is legal in a format, you may use any version of that card. Ponder
has been printed three times, in Lorwyn, M10, and M12. Since M12 is one of the sets that is in Standard, you may use any of the three versions of Ponder
in your deck.
