Let's say you have a 3 drop card with cascade. Now when you're "cascading" can you choose another 3 drop? Or does it HAVE to be a 2 drop?

Cascade - When you cast this spell, exile cards from the top of your library until you exile a nonland card that costs less. You may cast it without paying its mana cost. Put the exiled cards on the bottom in a random order.

The card HAS to have a CMC lower than the one you played. If it is a 3 drop card, then you can only cascade into a 2, 1, or 0 cmc card.

@iBryguy Now what if you're cascading to something like Fieldmist Borderpost where you have the option to only pay (1). Would that be acceptable?

Doesn't work. The option to pay 1 does not change the cmc.

@pandith Sadly, no. Cascade looks at a card's CMC and ignores alternative costs. You can pay additional costs of cards you cascade into (Such as the kicker on Rite of Replication if you cascaded from a higher cost card into it), and you'll have to pay any mandatory costs (Such as the Sacrifice a Creature cost of Altar of Bone ), but alternative costs are ignored entirely.
