Creature Mechanics (Elusive Krasis's Second Ablility)

Deck Help forum

I was playing with my simic deck the other day and I have recently add 2 Elusive Krasis and I equipped an Illusionist's Bracers to one and I know that because of Illusionist's Bracers evolves twice but would his second ability activate two times (because he evolved twice) or four times because of Illusionist's Bracers .

Simplified: Is Elusive Krasis s second ability considered an "Activated" ability?

thats a triggered ability, so Strionic Resonator would work better maybe?

it's a triggered ability.

"603.1. Triggered abilities have a trigger condition and an effect. They are written as "[Trigger condition], [effect]," and begin with the word "when," "whenever," or "at." They can also be expressed as "[When/Whenever/At] [trigger event], [effect]."""

something like Strionic Resonator would work, but since evolve doesn't target, you can't change the target (second part of Strionic Resonator wording).

Illusionist's Bracers wouldn't evolve him twice, since Evolve isn't an activated ability. It IS, though, a triggered ability. So if you used Strionic Resonator , it would copy the evolve trigger, effectively putting another +1/+1 counter on him.

Thanks for the help guys. I'll have to get my hands on a couple Strionic Resonator s
I guess. :D

So even though the bracers don't specify a type of abilities (only that they are not mana abilities), they don't work for triggered abilities?

ChiefBell says... #7

Waffleradio - the bracers specify, 'whenever an ability... is activated'. A triggered ability isn't activated, it's triggered.

What about Illusionist's Bracers on a Progenitor Mimic ? Would it produce 2 copies?

December 18, 2013 3:39 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #9

Well no.... because you can't have equipment on a creature until it's entered the battlefield. By the time it's entered the battlefield the copy has been made.

About the upkeep ability - again, no. It's not an activated ability.

You're misunderstanding what an activated ability is. All activated abilites have the form - cost: effect. For example - tap: untap target creature.

I guess my playgroup isn't that experienced on the subject of Activated vs Triggered abilities... Thanks for the help though! :P

Also, you seem like an experienced MT:G player. Could you take a look at my deck The Overflowing Forest (T3 Win!) and maybe give some constructive criticism? I'm kind of new-ish to magic (I've been playing for about 6 months give-or-take) and I'd like some help on deck building.

Thanks!

OH MY GOD... I meant Renegade Krasis not Elusive Krasis !!!

Cool.

Both creatures have triggered abilities anyway. You can tell they're triggered because they say, 'Whenever bla bla bla'. All triggered abilities start with 'Whenever...'

Ok thanks for the info! Reading the text on Strionic Resonator helped a lot...

Waffleradio says... #16

ChiefBell Right! I didn't read that "activated" part carefully enough, thanks.

There are particular words in magic that seem insignificant but actually have a lot of meaning.

What race do you play in 40k?

December 18, 2013 5:14 p.m.

Waffleradio says... #21

Eldar and Imperial Guard. You play?

ChiefBell says... #22

I played necron and daemonhunters a long time ago. Recently thought about going dark eldar or space wolves. Too much money though.

What does 40k stand for?

December 18, 2013 5:42 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #24

Warhammer 40, 000. A fantasy roleplaying, war game involving plastic miniatures. Pretty cool, very nerdy.

Sounds interesting! :P My brother is getting into D&D so I'm getting some exposure to fantasy roleplaying.

It seems that it's already been established that Evolve is a triggered ability. Since a lot of people have already mentioned Strionic Resonator , another card (albeit in different colors) that works really well with Evolve is Corpsejack Menace . That card is also bonkers with Master Biomancer , Kalonian Hydra , and Prime Speaker Zegana , which show up in a lot of Evolve decks.

Warhammer 40k is more sci-fi, gritty dark while Warhammer Fantasy is more like a grittier, dirtier Tolkien/DnD universe. They're tabletop games though, think Starcraft + chess. In fact Starcraft was almost completely based on Warhammer 40k (in terms of races and aesthetic). At the end of the singleplayer credits there's a quick "Thanks to Games Workshop."

If you're into pen & paper games as well as the Warhammer universe, check out Fantasy Flight Games. They have several core games representing various aspects. Dark Heresy, Rogue Trader, Deathwatch and Only War are the core books.

40k can be real expensive. I've taken to getting most minis from Ebay or thewarstore.

I don't know the last time you played ChiefBell, but it's an interesting scene in 6th. Fliers, allies and the recent Escalation supplement (introduces superheavies to the normal game) have certainly changed the landscape. Much more freeform.

An "activated ability" is one that requires you to do something separate in order to use it, i.e. pay mana (Zameck Guildmage ), tap (Sylvan Caryatid though that is a "mana ability"), sacrifice (Cartel Aristocrat ), etc. Generally speaking, if there's a colon (:), it's an activated ability.
