Debating Mistcutter Hydra over Scavenging Ooze

Deck Help forum

Lately, I've been thinking about using Mistcutter Hydra instead of Scavenging Ooze in my deck, Krokodil. It gives me a smaller chance against Mono-Black, but it's a better top-deck in the late game against Esper and a brick wall against Mono-Blue.

If I do the swap, should I drop 1x Polukranos, World Eater to take Mistcutter Hydra up to 3?

Is this a sideboard choice or maindeck choice? Personally I would add the 3rd hyydra to the SB and side it in against the matchups you mentioned removing a Polukranos, World Eater . On the SB I would remove the 1 Abrupt Decay for the 3rd hydra.

I would say that, while cool, it is almost strictly a sideboard card unless your meta is nothing but control and MUD. However I would run 2-3 in my SB if I was running it, so that is something to think about.

MUD is an entirely different deck, you should probably call it MUDev.

I've seen a lot of U/W, Esper, and Mono-blue in my meta, with Esper being my toughest matchup. Of course, there are also those few rogue decks, like Boros midrange, 5-color control, Mono-Red devotion, and a couple Gruul decks.

The problem with Mistcutter Hydra against esper, is esper uses a lot of kill spells in black that doesn't care about the pro-blue/can't be countered part. I'm thinking Stormbreath Dragon might be better than Mistcutter Hydra for you in those match ups. While not going to be great against esper, it's a finisher, something you drop and swing for lethal. But I like the r/g midrange deck matchup against esper the best.

Stormbreath Dragon is just as likely to get removed with a kill spell as Mistcutter Hydra , though. The flying doesn't matter as much except when Elspeth, Sun's Champion is birthing triplets each turn, but at least the pro-blue means I can swing into an AEtherling unblocked.

Against mono-blue, Hydra is better, too.

I don't have any Dragons (despite pulling 3 over the course of release weekend), but I do have the Hydras. I might try them out just to see how they do this week, then try to borrow dragons for next week.

meecht misplay if that happens with Stormbreath Dragon , It's a finisher, late game thing, it should be when they tap out or exhausted a heavy number of kill spells already, it will swing and hit for 5 that turn, usually at that point in the game, it should be enough and doesn't need to last past that.

Unfortunately, the people that play Esper at my LGS are experienced with the deck and/or control decks in general, so they are never tapped out except to cast Sphinx's Revelation at the end of my turn.

I really wish more scrubs tried to netdeck at my shop...
